Rangers fans were able to get their mind off of Monday night's drubbing at the hands of the Los Angeles Angels, as news broke shortly after the game that the Rangers acquired catcher Geovany Soto in exchange for AA SP Jake Brigham.
↵The move isn't likely going to ignite the fan base, or really change the 2012 Texas Rangers, but it's not meant to. Soto should serve, at the least, as a defensive replacement over Yorvit Torrealba, who was designated for assignment in a corresponding roster move.
↵Soto isn't hitting much in Chicago, to the tune of .199/.284/.347. Ugly numbers, indeed. Soto, though, does have nearly a 23% line drive percentage, and an absurdly low .209 BABIP coming into Monday night's action. It's probable that he'll hit much better in Texas.
↵Soto has put up two very good years -- a 3.9 WAR season in 2008 and a 3.4 WAR season in 2010. He's got talent, but, for a catcher, he's getting old as he turned 29 in January. He'll be arbitration eligible for the final time this winter, and could help more next year than this year.
↵For now, it's a low risk, potentially high reward trade -- though I wouldn't count on Soto making a major impact this season, he could next year.
