Rangers not expected to tender contract to Geovany Soto

Veteran catcher Geovany Soto will reportedly not return to Texas in 2013 after a 47-game stint with the Rangers during the season.

After hitting just .196 from the plate last season with Texas, veteran catcher Geovany Soto is not expected to be tendered an offer from the Rangers according to a report by Buster Olney of ESPN.

The 29-year-old Soto was acquired from the Cubs in a midseason trade on July 30, but hardly materialized into the player the Rangers hoped they would be getting offensively. Far removed from his productive 2004 campaign where he blasted 23 home runs and drove in 86 RBI, Soto's free-swinging tendencies at the plate have helped contribute to his swift decline in recent years.

With the Rangers fully prepared to look elsewhere for a new catcher this offseason, the San Juan, Puerto Rico native will now be forced to navigate free agency without a team to call home for the first time in his career. Soto began his MLB career with the Cubs in 2005 as a promising prospect with unmistakable power, but is simply no longer the same type of elite talent that he was once billed as.
