Rangers claim catcher Konrad Schmidt off waivers from Diamondbacks

Schmidt played in eight games over two separate seasons with Arizona.

The Texas Rangers have added some depth at the catcher position. With Mike Napoli testing the free agent waters, Texas went to the waiver wire to acquire a back up:

Schmidt has spent his entire career in the Diamondbacks organization. He played four games for Arizona in 2010 and four more in 2012 going without a hit last season. He did have a good year with the Diamondbacks Triple-A affiliate Reno Aces. He hit .338/.413/.750 while belting seven home runs and driving in 47 runs. He was also named a PCL All-Star in 2011.

Napoli played in 108 games for the Rangers last year, hitting .227/.343/.469 with 24 home runs and 56 runs batted in. The Rangers also have Geovany Soto on the roster who they acquired in a trade with the Chicago Cubs at last year's trade deadline. The former National League Rookie of the Year hit .196/.253/.338 in 47 games with Texas, including five home runs.
