Texas Rangers to flip-flop base coaches for the 2013 season

Gary Pettis and Dave Anderson will switch base coaching boxes in 2013, with Pettis heading to third and Anderson relocating to first base coach

Jake Roth-US PRESSWIRE

The Texas Rangers have announced that they will bring back their entire coaching staff for the 2013 season -- save 2012 hitting coach Scott Coolbaugh who was replaced by Dave Magadan -- but the team will reportedly flip-flop its base coaches for 2013, according to Adam Morris of SB Nation's Rangers blog Lone Star Ball.

Dave Anderson, who has manned the third base coaching box since 2008, will move to first base, and Rangers' first base coach Gary Pettis will take over the third base coaching duties. Pettis also serves as the team's baserunning coach, and the team thinks that moving him to third base will help the Rangers "benefit from Pettis' baserunning expertise".

Morris notes that Anderson has been criticized by Rangers fans over the past few years, but adds that "fans of most teams seem to think their third base coach makes bad decisions", while guessing that Pettis will likely be criticized just as much as Anderson or any other third base coach might be.
