Via Rockies beat writer Troy Renck on Twitter:
↵↵↵Hearing this: A Major league source says Rockies are out on Young. Not sure if can be revived. But Rockies appear out on Young
↵This deal was complicated by $$ and the fact that Rangers' demands changed once they Vlad signed. More reluctant to move Young
↵Hearing that they rockies can't make it work.
↵Rangers aren't as inclined to compromise on $$ or prospects bc don't have replacement for Young ... and aren't going to just give Young away
↵Especially since Young has ripped organization. They are in a tough spot to just honor his request.
↵
Well, that's concerning.
↵Michael Young would be very nice depth. He'd be insurance if Mitch Moreland doesn't pan out. He'd potentially be a great platoon partner if Moreland does pan out but struggles against lefties. He'd be a relatively fantastic fill in if someone gets hurt.
↵The problem his, he is extremely expensive depth, and relieving the burden of that contract is likely worth it for any useful Major Leaguer. On top of that, there's the concern that he will start the season ahead of Napoli on the organizational depth chart, even though Napoli is likely the better DH option. Then there's the whole debacle yesterday, that would have just made it that much easier to stomach his departure.
↵Use correctly, I'm happy with what Young can give the Rangers in 2011, so part of me would be okay about not dealing him, but getting rid of that contract before his 10/5 rights kick in (which happens in May) was quite realistically better for the team long term than losing his bat was bad for the team short term. (Did that make sense?) And the Rockies were likely the best chance of getting rid of him.
↵If this report is true, I'd be willing to bet Young is now more likely than not to be a Ranger in 2011, but we'll see. All of how this has gone down is distressing.
