FanGraphs On Feliz And The Closer's Role

Dave Cameron has an article up at FanGraphs right now discussing what happens to the Rangers' bullpen if Neftali Feliz sticks in the rotation this spring.

He takes an interesting angle, pointing out how the team's bullpen behind Feliz is made of dominant platoon pitchers, but not guys who can handle both sides of the plate.

This is one of the main reasons why I don’t think Feliz will end up sticking in the rotation. It’s tough for me to see Washington being comfortable with any of these four options, especially when his alternative is a guy who had no problems with hitters from either side of the plate last year. However, if the Rangers decide to stick with Feliz as a starting pitcher, they should strongly consider going with a closer-by-committee approach.

It is Cameron's belief that Ron Washington would not favor using a bullpen committee, deciding rather to adhere to the concept of set roles.

I don't think there is a Rangers fan who doubts that.
