While we do not have official lineup reports for Monday's Divisional Series tie-breaking game in St. Petersburg, we do have some early reports.
On the side of the Rangers, T.R. Sullivan reports manager Ron Washington will be sticking with the lefty Mitch Moreland against left handed Rays starter David Price. This is likely a reaction to Moreland hitting his first home run in Texas since June on Saturday, but it is a pretty silly reaction. Moreland's start means no Yorvit Torrealba. While Moreland was the better hitter this season, it was not by much, and not nearly enough to outweigh the platoon difference. For his career, Torrealba is almost as good of a hitter against lefties (90 wRC+) as Moreland was in 2011 overall (92 wRC+), let alone Moreland's career against lefties so far (57 wRC+). Moreland over Torrealba damages the Rangers' offense significantly when a left handed pitcher is on the mound.
On the Rays side, Joe Maddon is not swayed by recent home runs, as he will be benching Kelly Shoppach -- who has been destroying Texas so far -- for John Jaso against the right handed Colby Lewis. The reason being Jaso is a lefty, and Shoppach goes from a good hitter to a well below-average hitter against righties. The exact same can be said of shortstop Sean Rodriguez, who will be benched in favor of the lefty Reid Brignac. This per Gerry Fraley.
