On this date, Major League Baseball approved the move of the Washington Senators to Minnesota. To reconcile with the decision, MLB announced, on the same day, an expansion franchise in Washington to fill the gap created by the move.

Fifty years later, that same franchise, though in a new city with a new name and a new fan base, finds itself on the eve of playing its first World Series game.
