The Nagurski and Outland Trophy award watch lists for the 2012 college football season have been released, and the Texas Longhorns have landed four players to the Nugarski watch list and one to the Outland Trophy watch list. The one player who made the Outland for Texas is guard Mason Walters as one of the nation's best interior lineman.
The players who are considered one of the best defensive players in the nation are cornerback Carrington Byndom who in 2011 had 38 tackles, seven tackles for a loss, two interceptions and 15 passes broken up; defensive end Jackson Jeffcoat had 63 total tackles, 17 tackles for loss, eight sacks and seven quarterback hurries; defensive end Alex Okafor recorded 52 tackles, 12.5 tackles for loss, six sacks and 13 quarterback hurries; and safety Kenny Vaccaro had two interceptions, 46 tackles, 6.5 tackles for loss and a pair of sacks.
