The Texas Longhorns defeated the Coppin State Eagles, 69-46, in a preliminary game of the EA Sports Maui Invitational on Monday night in Austin.
Sophomore guard Sheldon McClellan scored 25 points for Texas to lead all scorers, coming up big in the continued absence of Myck Kabongo, who is being held out with eligibility concerns. McClellan poured in 25 on just 10 field goal attempts, going 3-4 from behind the arc and 8-10 from the free-throw line.
Texas built a 33-19 lead at halftime, and slowly added to it over the second half.
The only other Longhorn in double figures was freshman forward Ioannis Papapetrou, who scored ten points and grabbed nine rebounds in the win. Another freshman, guard Javan Felix, also stepped up in Kabongo's absence with nine assists in 33 minutes of play.
The Longhorns will have a week off before playing Maui Invitational host Chaminade on Nov. 19. That game tips at 8:30 p.m. CT and will air on ESPNU.
