Texas vs. Kansas: Charlie Weis benches Dayne Crist

After giving up 49.25 points a game in Big 12 play this season, the Texas defense has a get well present on Saturday in the form of a Kansas offense that averages only 17.3 points a game, 117th in the country.

Not only will they be matching up with the worst offense they'll face for the rest of the season, the Longhorns defenders will be playing against a redshirt freshman QB making his first career start.

Charlie Weis announced the change in his weekly press conference, as Michael Cummings will be taking over for Dayne Crist, a fifth-year senior who had transferred to Lawrence before the season started.

And while the struggles of the Jayhawks offense go far past any one player, the highly-touted Notre Dame transfer has not helped in 2012: he's completed only 49.5% of his passes for 1,101 yards, 3 TD's and 7 INT's.

Cummings, a three-star dual-threat QB out of Kileen, TX, has gotten his first taste of action in the last three games. He's completed 17-35 passes for 198 yards, 1 TD and 2 INT's.

It's far too soon to say whether he's the answer behind center for Weis, but for a 1-6 team going nowhere fast, there was no reason not to try and develop some younger players for the rest of 2012.

The Longhorns defense has run out of excuses for their play a long-time ago, but they really have none on Saturday.
