The SMU Mustangs bounced back after an awful first quarter performance, but still trail the TCU Horned Frogs, 21-10, at halftime in Dallas.
With just over two minutes left in the half, TCU speedster Skye Dawson returned a punt 64 yards down to the SMU four yard line. Matthew Tucker converted a touchdown on the next play, which gave TCU the same 14-point lead it enjoyed after the first quarter.
The big punt return took wind out of SMU's sails, who responded early in the quarter to make it 14-7 as the Mustangs posted a strong 86-yard drive. Zach Line powered for a 21-yard touchdown run to finish that drive.
SMU also responded after Dawson's big punt return, moving the ball deep into Horned Frogs territory. But a Mustangs personal foul stifled the drive, forcing SMU to settle for a field goal for the 21-10 halftime score.
Of note, the half uniquely ended with two consecutive field goal attempts, one from each team. TCU missed a 54-yarder short as time expired, which SMU returned back out to midfield. A personal foul on the Horned Frogs on the return put the Mustangs in range for a 54-yarder of their own, which was also missed.
