After 41 combined points in the first half, the defenses were the story of the third quarter as neither Texas nor Texas Christian were able to muster much success offensively, although a 32-yard field goal by Jaden Oberkrom was enough to give the Horned Frogs a 23-21 lead.
On each of the first three offensive possessions of the second half for the Red Raiders, they were unable to earn a first down and were forced to punt deep in their own territory on each.
TCU had much more success offensively and was able to move the ball much more than Texas Tech, but didn't earn the points to show for it. Cody Davis intercepted Trevone Boykin early in the third quarter to end TCU's first drive and the defense managed to hold the Horned Frogs in the red zone and force a field goal on their second drive.
However, the quarter ended with TCU driving deep into Texas Tech territory. The fourth quarter began with a third-and-long for the Horned Frogs on the Red Raiders' 28-yard line.
