While their 4-5 record isn't particularly impressive, the SMU Mustangs certainly have a better record than the winless Southern Mississippi Golden Eagles. After nine consecutive losses for Southern Miss, six of which came via double-digits, it's not a surprise that the Mustangs are 13 1/2-point favorites to bounce back from their Saturday loss to the UCF Knights.
The bettors are also expecting a high-scoring affair as the over/under for the game is set at 53, despite the fact that the Golden Eagles have averaged fewer than 20 points per game. However, the Mustangs have averaged just over 30 points and have allowed just over 28 points per game. In four of their last five games, the over has been the winning bet.
Also, the trends would suggest that SMU covers the spread, as Southern Miss has struggled to win against the spread, despite the fact that the points are often in their favor. With points afforded to them in almost every week, Southern Miss has still managed to go 2-7 against the spread in 2012.
