The Southern Methodist Mustangs claimed sole possession of the second spot in Conference USA's West Division with a victory against the Southern Miss Golden Eagles on Saturday. SMU dominated Southern Miss in a 34-6 rout and now sits a game ahead of the third place Houston Cougars.
The Cougars meanwhile fell 41-7 to Tulsa, which leads the West Division in C-USA at 6-0 in conference and 8-2 overall. Tulsa sits two games ahead of the Mustangs, who are 4-2 in league games.
The Rice Owls, who were on a bye week, are now in fourth place with Tulane right behind with a similar 2-4 record in conference play. The UTEP Miners are last in the West at 1-5.
Central Florida has control of the East Division at 6-0 and it holds a one-game lead over East Carolina. They are followed by Marshall in third place, UAB and Memphis in fourth and fifth, and Southern Miss in last place.
