SMU (1-3) will kick off its Conference USA schedule on Saturday when they head to El Paso to face off against UTEP (1-4). Both teams have only a single win so far in 2012 after tough non-conference schedules, with the Mustangs getting a victory over FCS school Stephen F. Austin and the Miners beating New Mexico State.
Zach Line has been the leading attacker on the Mustangs offense, putting up two 100-yard rushing games already in 2012 to add to the 17 he has in his career. Line has been the second most prolific rusher in SMU history, behind only Eric Dickerson. He and SMU quarterback Garrett Gilbert should have a solid day, facing a defense that has allowed an average of 29 points per game.
Even with their 41-point performance, the Miners have only scored 20.9 points per game. Taking away that performance, the average drops to 15.5.
The Mustangs took the win the last time the two teams met, taking a 28-17 win in September 2011. It was Line who did the most damage for SMU in that game, putting up 114 yards and two touchdowns.
Game time, TV channel: 7 p.m. CT, TW Texas
Point spread: SMU favored by 2.5 points.
