Larry Brown reeled in his first high-profile recruit on Tuesday, three-star shooting guard Sterling Brown from Chicago.
Brown, an athletic 6'4 180 guard, has excellent bloodlines, as he's the younger brother of Shannon Brown, a seven-year NBA veteran who has won two NBA championships with the LA Lakers.
Former Illinois assistant coach Jerrance Howard, who Brown hired for his recruiting ties to the Chicago area, was instrumental in the recruiting process. Sterling Brown, a high school senior in the class of 2013, will be the biggest recruit to come to SMU since Bryan Hopkins, the former Dallas Lincoln star, over a decade ago.
It's a huge first step for the rebuilding process, but with the talent pool left so shallow by Matt Doherty, the Mustangs are still nowhere where Brown expects them to be.
Realistically, they are two recruiting classes from contending for an NCAA tournament berth, which would put them on schedule to compete in the 2014-2015 season.
