Armed Forces Bowl: Missed Field Goals Doom SMU, Army Wins 16-14

New, 2 comments

The SMU Mustangs were in position to take the lead in the Armed Forces Bowl late in the fourth quarter – but failed to do so.

SMU, after scoring a touchdown to cut Army’s lead to 16-14, forced Army to go three-and-out on the ensuing possession. Seven plays later, the Mustangs attempted a 47 yard field goal, but Matt Szymanski’s attempt was no good – his second miss of the day – and SMU gave the ball back to Army with just over four minutes to play.

The Mustangs wouldn’t see the ball again.

Army ran out the clock on six plays, capped off by a critical third down conversion with 1:18 to go. Army quarterback Trent Steelman completed a 22 yard pass to Davyd Brooks for a first down, ending SMU’s comeback attempt. Since SMU was out of time outs, Army simply took a knee and ran out the clock, solidifying their first bowl win in 25 years.
