The Texas Tech Red Raiders prevailed over the TCU Horned Frogs in triple overtime, 56-53, in what may have been the craziest game in all of college football on Saturday. It was a gut-wrenching loss for Horned Frog fans, including those at SB Nation's TCU blog, Frogs O' War:

The reason TCU lost this game is because of missed opportunities. I counted three times that a TCU cornerback/Safety got both hands on the ball and didn't hang onto it, and two of those drives turned into Tech touchdowns. TCU drove into Tech territory again and again with consistency throughout the game, but when the field got short the Frogs got conservative (understandable given our red zone turnover issues) and ended up kicking field goals.

However, some chose to see the positives in the loss, and are encouraged by what taking a Top 25 team to triple overtime means for next year's version of the Frogs:

So Texas Tech is a top-half team in the Big 12, and TCU took 'em to three overtimes, playing sixteen true freshmen. This is good news for 2013. Imagine how this game would have gone if Nykiren Wellington or Ty Horn or Tanner Brock or Matt Anderson or Travoskey Garrett or D.J.
During a 56-53 triple-overtime thriller, Red Raiders fans took a jab at the troubled TCU quarterback.

After his arrest on Oct. 4 on charges of driving while intoxicated, quarterback Casey Pachall was suspended from the TCU Horned Frogs football program indefinitely. Five days later, the school announced that Pachall would leave the university to enroll in a inpatient rehab facility for substance abuse treatment.

In his place, TCU has had to turn to redshirt freshman Trevone Boykin, including Saturday's game against the Texas Tech Red Raiders. While it was Boykin that led the Horned Frogs to a third-overtime loss with four touchdown passes and 332 yards through the air, the Texas Tech fans couldn't resist the opportunity to take a jab at Pachall.

Hmm...for some reason, I get the feeling that the "OZ. OF COKE" isn't talking about a single ounce Coca-Cola. Maybe there's some sort of substance that is commonly referred to as "coke" that somehow relates to Pachall's need to enter into a rehab facility.

After four quarters and three overtime periods, the No. 17 Texas Tech Red Raiders managed to pull out a 56-53 victory over the No. 23 TCU Horned Frogs.

Down 10 points with less than three minutes remaining, TCU managed to dominate in the final three minutes of regulation and force overtime.

Horned Frogs quarterback Trevone Boykin threw a strike down the left sideline to LaDarius Brown for a 60-yard touchdown with 2:25 remaining, but TCU was unable to recover the ensuing onside kick. However, when their defense held Texas Tech and forced a punt, Boykin and the Horned Frogs were given an opportunity with less than a minute remaining and they took advantage by driving down the field.

TCU was able to set up a 42-yard field goal for redshirt freshman Jaden Oberkrom who hit his fifth field goal of the game to send it to overtime.

In the first two overtimes, each team traded touchdowns as each Seth Doege of Texas Tech and Boykin tossed a pair of touchdown passes. The second overtime touchdown pass for Doege came from a Wildcat formation as the Red Rangers clearly dug deep in their playbook for a trick play at a crucial time.

In the third overtime, though, the Horned Frogs finally slipped up and settled for a 38-yard Oberkrom field goal, which was a school-record sixth in the game. Doege took advantage of the opportunity, hitting Alex Torres in the middle of the end zone to give the Red Raiders a 56-53 victory.

Box score hero: There's really no other candidate than Doege. The Texas Tech passer dominated through the air when it mattered most, throwing three overtime touchdowns in the victory. He finished 30-of-43 passing with 318 yards, seven touchdowns and no interceptions.

Rankings ramifications: Both teams were ranked in the first edition of the BCS Standings, but neither had a high ranking. The win will undoubtedly move the Red Raiders up some, while the loss for the Horned Frogs will likely cause them to fall out of the top 25.

Next week: TCU will travel to Stillwater, Okla., to try to bounce back against Oklahoma State, a team that will likely be ranked after the Cowboys beat Iowa State, 31-10. Texas Tech will have arguably the toughest task of their season when they play on the road against No. 4 Kansas State.

The Texas Tech Red Raiders and TCU Horned Frogs went to overtime after a furious comeback from TCU tied the score late and forced extra time.

Seth Doege of Texas Tech orchestrated two touchdown drives to give his team a 36-26 lead, but with less than three minutes remaining the Horned Frogs managed to claw back in to contention. Trevone Boykin found LaDarius Brown for a 60-yard touchdown with 2:25 remaining, but an onside kick attempt failed.

However, TCU managed to stop the Red Raiders and got the ball back with less than a minute to drive the field. Boykin completed several pass plays and got the Horned Frogs into field goal range where Jaden Oberkrom nailed his fifth field goal of the game, this time from 42 yards.

The Red Raiders won the coin toss for overtime and elected to play defense first, making the Horned Frogs take the field on offense first.

After 41 combined points in the first half, the defenses were the story of the third quarter as neither Texas nor Texas Christian were able to muster much success offensively, although a 32-yard field goal by Jaden Oberkrom was enough to give the Horned Frogs a 23-21 lead.

On each of the first three offensive possessions of the second half for the Red Raiders, they were unable to earn a first down and were forced to punt deep in their own territory on each.

TCU had much more success offensively and was able to move the ball much more than Texas Tech, but didn't earn the points to show for it. Cody Davis intercepted Trevone Boykin early in the third quarter to end TCU's first drive and the defense managed to hold the Horned Frogs in the red zone and force a field goal on their second drive.

However, the quarter ended with TCU driving deep into Texas Tech territory. The fourth quarter began with a third-and-long for the Horned Frogs on the Red Raiders' 28-yard line.

The Texas Tech Red Raiders are making it interesting as they lead the TCU Horned Frogs 21-20 at halftime of their Big 12 Conference game in Fort Worth, TX.

The Horned Frogs led 17-7 after Matthew Tucker's 4-yard touchdown run with 8:13 remaining in the half but the Red Raiders answered with a 4-play, 75 yard scoring drive that culminated in a 33-yard touchdown pass from Seth Doege to Darrin Moore to cut it to 17-14.

Then the Red Raiders recovered an onside kick on the ensuing kickoff and were able to score on a 29-yard touchdown pass to Eric Ward from Doege that was originally ruled an incomplete pass before it was overturned, giving the Red Raiders a 21-17 lead.

The Red Raiders have still not been able to run the ball against the TCU defense but have managed to stick around behind Doege's play (159 yards passing, 3 TDs). TCU has a much more balanced attack with quarterback Trevone Boykin (135 yards passing, 1 TD, 1 INT) and four players combining to give the Horned Frogs' running game its 110 yard total.

The Horned Frogs struck first with a 19-yard touchdown pass from Trevone Boykin to Skye Dawson early in the quarter.
The Horned Frogs have dominated time of possession so far as they've maintained the ball for 8:49 of the first quarter. The Red Raiders have zero rushing yards on four carries compared to the Horned Frogs' 82 yards led by Aundre Dean and B.J.
Both teams come into the game with identical records of 5-1 overall and 2-1 in the Big 12. This is a big test for both teams as the Red Raiders look to prove their status as a top 20 team and the Horned Frogs looked to continue their strong start to their first season in the Big 12.
The TCU Horned Frogs host No. 18 Texas Tech on Saturday in Fort Worth. Texas Tech beat an Iowa State team that knocked off TCU earlier in the year and TCU coach Gary Patterson acknowledged in his Tuesday press conference that interstate rivalry games can mean more than regular matchups:

"If you ask if I could win a game between Iowa State or Baylor, I would say Baylor. If you asked me the same thing about Iowa State and Texas Tech, I would say Texas Tech. We know Baylor. We know the kids at Texas Tech, and there are bragging rights on the line."

Asked whether this was as big a rivalry as, say, Texas, since the two teams have not played each other much recently, Patterson said that since so many players faced each other in high school, "there is a natural rivalry." Texas Tech and TCU haven't squared off since 2006, when No. 20 TCU beat No. 22 Texas Tech 12-3 in Fort Worth. That came two years after Tech beat TCU 70-35 in Lubbock.

In the Southwestern Conference days, the teams did play every year from 1950-1995. The Red Raiders own a 28-23-3 advantage in the series, which began in 1926.

Don't be fooled though, there's more than bragging rights on the line Saturday, as both teams are 2-1 in Big 12 play, a game behind Kansas State.
