Friday's Baylor Bears win against the ULM Warhawks proved to be one of the most exciting games of the college football season. Despite the 47-42 win, Mark C. Moore over at Our Daily Bears said Baylor showed many positives and negatives that will follow the team all season long:

Our offense did basically everything I expected against ULM's defense. Yes, the two interceptions were killers early, especially the first, but overall they showed an attack that should send shivers up the spines of Big XII defensive coordinators. Baylor finished with 544 yards on 88 plays, the ninth time in a row the team topped 500 yards. Our offense is the most known of known quantities. And it appears we will go as far as they take us.

Moore went on to call the Bears' defense an abomination, as Louisiana-Monroe put up 560 yards of total offense. On the plus side, Moore called Baylor's receivers the strength of the team as Tevin Reese, Terrance Williams and Lanear Sampson combined for 322 yard receiving.

The Bears brought their win streak to nine games as they survived a road trip to Northeastern Louisiana on Friday night in a 47-42 thriller that only vaguely resembled a conventional football game.

Before Louisiana-Monroe (formerly known as Northeast Louisiana) moved up from D-1AA (now known as the FCS) in 1994, they had won three of the last seven Southland Conference championships, including a national title in 1987.

But despite being located in the middle of some of the deepest recruiting pools in the country, they've been completely unable to replicate that success in D-1A (now known as the FBS).

They haven't had a winning record once in the last 18 years, with an FBS winning percentage of 34% before the start of the 2012 season. UL-Monroe has become a graveyard for coaches, the final spot on the end of a long journey for those who couldn't get a better shot at a brass ring.

Ed Zaunbrecher's only chance as a head coach came in a five-year stretch from 1994-1998. Bobby Keasler, who lasted only four years, never got another shot after he was let go in 2002. Charlie Weatherbie took over in 2003, two years after posting an 0-7 record in his final season at Navy.

Todd Berry is their fourth head coach at the FBS level, and despite being only 51 years old, he's already a bruised survivor of the coaching carousel. This is his second stint as a head coach; he had to spend six seasons as a coordinator after a four-year stay at Army where he compiled a 5-35 record.

If ever a coach was going to challenge the conventional wisdom and try something daring, this would be the place to do it. Baylor found that out the hard way on Friday night, as they barely survived a feisty WarHawks team in a 47-42 nail-biter that felt more like NFL Blitz than a conventional football game.

The game lasted well over four hours, with Baylor running 88 plays and UL-Monroe getting off 85. There were over 1,000 total yards of offense and only three punts. The WarHawks were 1-3 on fourth down plays; the Bears were 4-4.

UL-Monroe forced as many turnovers (2) as they did punts (2).

Baylor opened the game with a punt and two consecutive INT's from Nick Florence. Here's their drive chart for the rest of the game: TD, TD, TD, Half (where the Bears bungled the final few seconds and could easily have attempted a FG), Punt, TD, FG, TD, TD, Game.

Baylor, who regularly sends offensive linemen to the NFL and has a first-round prospect in 6'5 335 OT Cyril Richardson, was just too big for UL-Monroe up front. They are just as talented on the perimeter, where a WR crew headlined by the 6'2 205 Terrance Williams (4 catches for 84 yards and 2 TD's) and the 5'10 165 Tevin Reese (8 catches for 145 yards and 2 TD's) shredded the WarHawks secondary.

Florence is no RG3, but personnel like that will make a lot of QB's look pretty good.

Yet with all that being said, UL-Monroe was still this close to pulling off the upset. If Kolton Browning hadn't fumbled a hand-off down 40-35 in the fourth quarter, there's no telling how the game would have ended. Art Briles has slowly made his program relevant in the Big 12 by playing a fast-paced spread offense that negates some of the weaknesses on his roster; Todd Berry has taken that philosophy to its logical conclusion at Monroe.

The most eyebrow raising portion of the game came in the first half, when Berry unveiled a two-QB offense where Browning ran a zone read with backup QB Cody Wells. Here's where it gets good: both Browning and Wells have the option to run the ball and they both have the option to pull up for the throw.

Wells finished the game with a passing line of 3-3 for 26 yards, but it was a performance that left the national TV audience asking for more. Is this the next Wildcat? Is this an easily defensible gimmick or could it be something that consistently works in this new age of college football?

It's easy to spit ball some scenarios where it might work. Take for example, Tim Tebow and Vince Young. Neither is what you would consider a traditional drop-back passer; how would it look if both could make easy reads in one half of the field? It certainly couldn't be any less entertaining than running out Blaine Gabbert or John Skelton for 16 games a season.

However, if such a radical experiment were to be tried, it wouldn't happen in the NFL. In a league where competitive balance is mandated, franchises can always pin their hopes on losing a bunch of games, finding an elite QB in the top 5 and winning in a more traditional fashion.

The true laboratory of the sport is at the high school level, where the spread of 7-on-7 football has dramatically raised the overall skill level of the QB's and the WR's in the state of Texas. I do some freelance coverage of high school football for the Dallas Morning News and there are things going on down here that defy description. On Thursday, a QB at Marble Falls (near San Antonio) threw for 724 yards in one game!

Seemingly every other high school has a high-octane passing game with four or five WR's that requires rapid decision-making from the QB. The position is becoming more democratic than ever before, and as the proliferation of the passing game continues, who is to say what is or is not feasible.

UL-Monroe may be a Sun Belt team with a 1-2 record, but they're worth keeping an eye on as the season progresses. One thing is for sure: you will never see Baylor schedule another game with this team, not after what almost happened on Friday night.

The Baylor Bears were able to come back from a 14-0 first quarter deficit to defeat the upset minded ULM Warhawks 47-42. Baylor starting quarterback Nick Florence threw two interceptions in the first quarter which led to both ULM touchdowns, but after that Florence and the Baylor offense kicked into high gear as they outscored ULM 47-28 the rest of the way.

Florence rebounded nicely by ending his day by completing 26-of-39 passes for 351 yards and four touchdowns. Wide receiver Tevin Reese was one of Florence's main targets as he caught eight passes for 145 yards and two touchdowns, and the other two touchdowns were thrown to Terrance Williams.

Once the Bears made their comeback in the second quarter, they were unable to put away the Warhawks until late in the second half. ULM took their first possession in the second half for a touchdown on a 58-yard touchdown run by Jyruss Edwards to go up 28-24. The same thing happened at the beginning of the fourth quarter where the Warhawks took a 35-34 lead on a 1-yard touchdown run by quarterback Kolton Browning.

The game was sealed for Baylor when ULM's Edwards fumbled the ball at the Baylor's 38-yard line with 5:40 left in the game. Baylor took the ball and drove down the field in 10 plays, including converting a 4th-and-1, and Florence connected with Terrance Williams on a 22-yard touchdown to put the game out of reach.

Box Score Hero: Baylor quarterback Nick Florence recovered from a poor first quarter where he threw two interceptions, but he rebounded nicely to complete 26-of-39 passes for 351 yards and four touchdowns. He also ran the ball nine times for 55 yards.

Rankings Ramifications: Baylor has a real good chance of being ranked, prior to this game they were 27th in AP Poll and 28th in USA Today Coaches Poll.

But Did They Cover? Nope, ULM scores a touchdown with six seconds left cover the 8.5-point spread.

The offenses cooled off some between the Baylor Bears and ULM Warhawks, but Baylor was able to extend their advantage by leading 34-28 after three quarters, by outscoring Louisiana-Monroe 10-7. The first touchdown of the second half came when Louisiana-Monroe running back Jyruss Edwards ran past the Baylor defense for 58 yards for the score.

Baylor responded later in the third quarter when Nick Florence through his third touchdown of the game when he connected with Tevin Reese on a 46-yard touchdown pass. That was Reese's second touchdown of the game, and put Baylor back in the lead 28-24.

Late in the third quarter, Baylor marched down inside their 10-yard line, and had to settle for a 21-yard field goal instead of a touchdown.

The second quarter saw a completely different Baylor Bears football team, after trailing 14-0 after the first quarter they rallied to outscore ULM Warhawks 24-7 and now have a 24-21 lead at the half.

Baylor quarterback Nick Florence rebounded after a poor first quarter where he threw two interceptions that led to both Louisiana-Monroe touchdowns. Since then Florence has completed 8-of-12 for 160 yards and two touchdowns in the second quarter. For the game Florence is 13-for-20 for 188 yards.

The first touchdown for Baylor came on a 11-play, 68 yard drive which was capped off on a 1-yard run by Glasco Martin. The next touchdown was set up when Baylor recovered a fumble, and on the very next play Florence completed a 48-yard touchdown pass to Terrance Williams which tied the game at 21 apiece.

Baylor was able to go up by three points when they stopped ULM who went for it on fourth down, and they drove down the field and converted a 34-yard field goal. At the end of the half Florence left the game, for reasons unknown right now, with backup Bryce Petty coming in and running the ball to converte on fourth down. Then he completed an 8-yard pass to set up the field goal.

Mistakes have plagued the Baylor Bears in the first quarter against the Louisiana-Monroe Warhawks as they trail 14-0. Baylor quarterback Nick Florence has completed 6-of-9 passes for 31 yards, however he has already thrown two interceptions which led to both Louisiana-Monroe touchdowns. The first interception came at midfield and the Warhawks were able to score five plays latter on a 22-yard touchdown pass.

The other interception was more costly for Baylor as it came at the Louisiana-Monroe 12-yard line. Once again the Baylor defense allowed Louisiana-Monroe to march down the field 78 yards to put up another score to increase their lead to 14-0.

Louisiana-Monroe has also successfully used a two-quarterback system against Baylor with Kolton Browning and Cody Wells. The two have combined to complete 9-of-13 for 88 yards with Browning owning the one passing touchdown.

The Baylor Bears will be wearing all-black uniforms and gold helmets in their road game against the Louisiana-Monroe Warhawks. Some Baylor fans were hoping for the black matte or green helmets instead of the gold shell with the green BU on the helmet.

The uniforms also have some wings on the shoulder pads which are similar to Oregon, but wouldn't it make more sense to have a bear paw or tear across the shoulder pads instead?

Louisiana-Monroe is countering with an all-white uniform and attempting to have the stadium be a white out as well. The contrast of these two uniforms will be quite interesting later Friday night.

Baylor may need more than these new uniforms against ULM if they are going to win. ULM has played well against two SEC teams, they defeated Arkansas in overtime and nearly upset Auburn, also an overtime game.

The Baylor Bears head on the road to take on Louisiana-Monroe on Saturday, looking to extend the nation's second-longest winning streak. The Bears, after winning the first two games of the season, have now won eight straight games dating back to 2011.

No. 17 TCU currently holds the longest streak in the nation at ten, while Alabama and South Carolina sit in third with seven straight wins.

The Bears are going to be facing a geared up team and crowd in Monroe, with Warhawks coach Todd Berry expecting a knock-down contest between the two teams.

"You're going to see two teams that are going to go out there and lay it on the line every snap," Berry said. "It's going to be fast-break football like you've never seen before in terms of the speed of the game."

The Warhawks are 1-1 to start the season, coming off a 31-28 overtime loss against Auburn and now welcoming Baylor for the team's home opener in Monroe. Kickoff is set for 7:01 p.m. CT with coverage on ESPN.
