Maybe Mike Jenkins didn't directly ask the Cowboys to trade him, but it's possible that at some point his agent did. Jenkins says he doesn't know.

The idea of trading Jenkins has made sense for a while now, since the Cowboys signed Brandon Carr to a big deal in the offseason and traded up to draft Morris Claiborne as well. So eventually an injured and seemingly disgruntled Jenkins supposedly demanded to be traded. Makes sense for both parties, but the Cowboys shut down any serious trade rumors.

For Dallas, hopefully this isn't a distraction going into the season.

Ryan Van Bibber of SB Nation Pro Football has his list up of ranking every cornerback squad, from one to 32, and it's rather positive about the Cowboys.
↵
Dallas comes in at No. 4, with this blurb:
↵
↵
Visions of Eli Manning throwing practice reps against the secondary no doubt influenced Dallas' offseason plans. Not only did the Cowboys sign a legitimate No. 1 corner in free agency in Carr, they drafted one as well, trading up to the sixth pick for Morris Claiborne. Orlando Scandrick looks like a lock in the slot role. Disgruntled Mike Jenkins could be dealt during training camp. If they can find a path to appeasement, keeping Jenkins gives them even more depth.
↵
↵
Probably not any surprise, with there being a lot of excitement over Dallas's off-season as far as the secondary. Avoiding too-frequent blow ups in the secondary has seemed like the Cowboys' white whale in recent years, so it would be nice if this was the move to finally get there. If not, maybe we start very seriously considering voodoo curses or something.
↵
The Eagles, unfortunately, rank just ahead, at third. The Giants come in at 11th, and the Redskins a delicious 26th.
↵

The team has invested a lot of money in Brandon Carr, Morris Claiborne and Orlando Scandrick over the last two seasons, but they aren't ready to cut the cords with their former first-round pick just yet.

Not only was CB depth a huge problem for the team last year, but trading Jenkins, who has played at a Pro Bowl level at times in Dallas, would be selling extremely low.

Jenkins, who will be a free agent next season, would obviously rather not be a nickel or dime CB headed into his first opportunity to get a big contract in the NFL. But if he pouts this season, he'll only sink his value even further, so the Cowboys are holding all the cards in this situation.

The Cowboys likely are going to part ways with Mike Jenkins. When that happens, though, is up in the air.

After unsuccessfully attempting to trade him during the draft, it appears Jenkins may remain with the Cowboys until training camp. At that point, a trade would appear to make sense. ESPN's John Clayton reported that a trade likely wouldn't happen until July or August.

Here is the reasoning from Pro Football Talk:

The theory here is that a cornerback-needy team might get desperate in camp, especially if one of its top corners goes down in practice or a preseason game. Jenkins is young, and his base salary is an affordable $1.052 million. He’s been a Pro Bowl-caliber cover guy when healthy.

Speaking of being healthy, Jenkins isn't yet. In January, he underwent shoulder surgery and PFT says he won't be medically cleared to play until training camp. The Colts, Lions and Titans appear to be vying for Jenkins' services.

Defensive back Mike Jenkins has said that he wants to be traded from the Dallas Cowboys, and while there are at least two teams interested for Jenkins services the Cowboys would receive more benefits in keeping rather than trading Jenkins.

Calvin Watkins of ESPN Dallas makes some good points to why the Cowboys should keep Jenkins. The best reason to keep Jenkins is because his trade value is low at the moment:

A front office source said the Cowboys want something significant for Jenkins if they deal him. What does significant mean? A fourth-round pick? Fifth round? Seventh round? It's doubtful the Cowboys are getting a first- or second-round selection for Jenkins. Not because Jenkins isn't worth it, but because he's in the final year of his contract and he's coming off shoulder surgery. The Cowboys don't have much leverage. If you just want to give him away, you can always get a seventh rounder for him. But keeping Jenkins could also mean gaining an compenstatory pick in next year's NFL draft.

That is an excellent reason because there is no incentive for a team to trade an acceptable draft pick to the Cowboys if the team can not sign Jenkins to a long-term deal. It does not matter if his on field play is Pro Bowl level because if he is going to a one-year player why would any team want to give up a high draft pick.

As for the Cowboys, another reason to not trade Jenkins is because he is good and that the defensive backfield situation was awful last year, and the Cowboys needs as many quality players as possible to improve the secondary.

The Indianapolis Colts have already said that they are interested in the Dallas Cowboys defensive back Mike Jenkins, and now the Detroit Lions name has surfaced as a possible suitor. The interesting part on the Lions wanting Jenkins is that they just drafted three defensive backs in the 2012 NFL Draft.

Jenkins has talent as he made the 2009 Pro Bowl and in 2011 had 10 pass break ups, plus he is durable as he played through injuries this past year and has played in 43 of 44 games since 2009.

While Detroit may want to trade for Jenkins at some point, the Cowboys have already said that they are not interested in trading Jenkins, well unless a team approaches them with a good offer.
