With Ranger fans taking over Minute Maid Park this weekend, the once-proud franchise will have a long way to go to win back their fans and compete in the AL West going forward.

"LET’S GO RANGERS! *clap clap clap-clap-clap* "LET’S GO RANGERS! *clap clap clap-clap-clap*

It isn’t too surprising to hear chants for the Texas Rangers -- one of the preseason favorites to come out of the American League and make another trip to the World Series -- in Texas. What is surprising is hearing them at Minute Maid Park, the home of their soon to be division rival Houston Astros.

I have been to three different home stands this season and chants for the visiting team have been audible at all of them. Astros fans rose to the occasion and drowned out the trespassers the first two times. But this weekend, it wasn’t even close.

"Sometimes you win, sometimes you lose, and sometimes it rains." -- Bull Durham

The 2012 season has been a rainy one indeed for Houston. With recent changes in the front office, an impending move into the American League and a complete roster overhaul in the works, the Astros aren't just playing for 2013. Realistically, they're playing for 2014, 2015 and maybe even 2016.

The result has been a stark drop in attendance, with the low turnout for the games a running joke amongst the Houston faithful.

The Rangers are on the opposite side of Nuke Laloosh’s spectrum: fresh off back-to-back trips to the World Series, with one of the baseball's most popular players (Josh Hamilton) as well as an international star in Yu Darvish. They've completely revitalized interest throughout the state in what was a perennially cellar-dwelling franchise.

It wasn't that long ago that the Astros were the toast of baseball in the state. In 2005, they capped off nearly a decade of excellent teams with a World Series run. But no help for stars like Roy Oswalt and Lance Berkman ever came up through the farm system, and that one World Series loss proved to be the last hurrah for the Jeff Bagwell and Craig Biggio era.

Wandy Rodriguez, a pitcher Houston has been more than willing to trade for several years, is the only holdover from those teams. Jim Crane, the Astros new owner, has already tried to distance himself from the franchise's recent failures: instituting new "fan friendly" rules at Minute Maid, lowering the price of tickets and testing fan reaction to a possible name/jersey change.

Despite grumblings from longtime fans, the move to the AL West will provide the fresh start of which the franchise is in desperate need. In the NL Central, the Astros have always been overshadowed by historic franchises like the St. Louis Cardinals, Cincinnati Reds, and Chicago Cubs.

In the AL West, management can build upon the rivalry with the Rangers and expose the Astros to new media markets on the west coast. Isn't it better to be the new kid on the block rather than the forgotten child? Based on the drop in attendance this season (over 4,000 a game: 21,242 this year before the Lone Star Series compared to 25,518 last year) and the reoccurring perception that Astros fans are actually the minority in their own stadium (they were definitely the minority on Friday as Rangers chants often drowned out Astros fans), I suspect the Astros front office has already concluded that the move is a change for the better.

As of right now, Houston is caught in a lost season awaiting the forecast of next year from the front office. Hopefully, the rain delay won't last too long, and the state of Texas can finally have a legitimate baseball rivalry.

The Texas Rangers currently have a five-game lead over the Oakland Athletics in the AL West.

The Texas Rangers have build up sizable five-game lead in the AL West at the quarter point of the 2012 MLB season, and despite being on a minor slump where they have gone 6-6 over their last 12 games they still have a commanding lead over second place Oakland Athletics.

The second through fourth spots are where the West is close as the difference between second place and fourth place is only 3.5 games. It is still very early in the season, but the Rangers look to be on their way to another AL West title.

Moving beyond just the AL West, the Rangers have the second best record in the American League and the third-best record in the Majors.

The Texas Rangers jumped out to an early lead and got a solid pitching performance from Colby Lewis to defeat Houston 6-1 Sunday.

Texas wasted little time getting to Houston starter Jordan Lyles. Josh Hamilton started the scoring in the first inning with a sacrifice fly. Nelson Cruz followed later with a two run single that made the score 3-0. Then pitcher Colby Lewis helped himself with a two run single of his own to increase the Texas lead to 5-0.

The Rangers extended the lead to 6-0 in the fifth when Daniel Murphy hit his fifth home run of the season. The Astros would score their only run of the game in the ninth on a home run by Jed Lowrie.

Hamilton, Lewis, Cruz, Elvis Andrus and Michael Young all finished with two hits in the game. Lewis pitched eight innings while allowing four hits and one run to snap a personal three-game losing streak. Lyles takes the loss after allowing six runs and nine hits in five innings for work.

Murphy was able to score on the inside park home run as one Astros outfielder dove and missed while the over outfielder tripped over the fallen player, and then the throw was not on target as Murphy crossed the plate. The Rangers added another run in the inning to go up 4-0.

Pitching was an issue as starter Derek Holland was making his first start since May 10 which gave him an extra four days of rest. That rest did not help Holland at all as he earned his third loss of the season and lasted only five innings while giving up five runs which all came off of three Astros home runs.

The Rangers had a chancee to tie the game in the bottom of the eighth inning with runners on second and third and one out, but Astros reliever Brandon Lyon was able to get out of the inning by retiring Nelson Cruz and Mike Napoli.

The game ended when the Rangers had Elvis Andrus on first with two outs, but then Josh Hamilton grounded out and Andrus was caught in a run down and tagged out to end the game.

The Texas Rangers David Murphy hit the rare inside the park home run against the Houston Astros on Saturday night. The play was much needed as it scored three runs and the Rangers are currently in a close battle against the Astros.

The play was a shot to center field but the right fielder dove for the ball and the center fielder tripped over the fallen player, and that left no one in the outfield to pick up the ball for a few seconds.

Once the ball was recovered and thrown to home plate, Astros catcher Chris Snyder was unable to make a tag attempt on Murphy.

Derek Holland takes the mound for the Texas Rangers, as interleague play continues on Saturday night as the Rangers take on the Houston Astros.

Holland hasn't started since May 10, but that is simply because Ron Washington is aiming to rest his starters throughout the season. Holland owns a 3-2 record to go along with a .227 BAA, 1.20 WHIP and 3.78 ERA. Holland has struck out 40 in 47.2 innings of work.

Josh Hamilton and Texas' offense will face off against Lucas Harrell, who gets the start for the Astros. Harrell is 2-3 on the young season, with a 4.40 ERA and 1.42 WHIP. He's struck out only 22 on the year and has issued 18 walks, so the Rangers should be able to put plenty of balls in play and have a slew of base runners against Harrell.

Televised coverage can be found nationally on FOX -- if you're in the proper market. If not, you will be forced to follow online or listen on the radio. Radio coverage can be found on 103.3 ESPN.
