After a few tense days in Waco, the Baylor athletic department can breathe easy, as the NCAA has agreed to accept the school's self-imposed penalties for a series of NCAA rules violations it self-disclosed from the men's and women's basketball programs:

While there has been a lot of smoke around the Baylor program in recent years, none of the violations, which mainly involved improper text messaging with prospective recruits, were anywhere close to a fire.

As a result, the NCAA found the penalties the school placed on itself acceptable.

On the men's side, Scott Drew will be suspended from the first two games of conference play next season, while his program will lose one scholarship and have fewer official visits and evaluation days.

On the women's side, Kim Mulkey will be prohibited from participating in off-campus recruiting this summer and her program will lose two scholarships for next season.

Over at NBC Sports, Rob Dauster has a pretty intriguing take on the timing of the revelations about the possible sanctions facing the Baylor basketball program:

What's much more interesting is the timing of this report being leaked.

You see, Trent Johnson's decision to take the head coaching position at TCU opened up the same job at LSU. One of the names that keeps coming up as Johnson's replacement? Scott Drew. Is LSU going to hire a coach days after news breaks of a recruiting scandal he was involved in? Are they willing to make that leap when the overwhelming sentiment was "that's all you got?"

It begs the question: where did Jason King get this scoop? Did Baylor leak this story in an effort to try and keep their head coach?

King, a Baylor alumnus, is well connected with the athletic program, who gave him the access to write this excellent feature on Perry Jones III's off-court trials this season.

However, it seems unlikely that Drew would consider leaving his perch at Waco, where he regularly beats out the top programs in the country for recruits, to go to LSU, a middle-of-the-pack basketball school in the SEC.

And while Jones was likely headed for the NBA Draft regardless, the leaks may end up helping to push star freshman forward Quincy Miller out the door as well.

They say once you hit the big-time there's more eyeballs looking and spying on you. Well, that's just what the Baylor men's and women's basketball teams are learning Monday, as multipule sources are reporting both programs may face NCAA sanctions thanks to placing more than 1,200 impermissible phone calls and text messages during a 29-month span.

Of course, there will now be debate whether or not placing phone calls or text messages is an act or cheating or just more silly NCAA violations being strictly enforced. Regardless of what you think, freshman forward Quincy Miller took to Twitter Monday to express his opinion on the matter.

Miller's reaction will be posted after the jump...

The men's and women's basketball teams placed 1,200 impermissible phone calls.

An NCAA investigation has uncovered that the Baylor Bears men's and women's basketball programs placed more than 1,200 impermissible phone calls and text messages during a 29-month span, according to a report obtained by ESPN's Jason King.

The NCAA's probe began with the recruitment of Brittney Griner, the reigning Wooden Award winner in women's basketball. This past season she helped lead Baylor to a 40-0 season to win the national championship.

The NCAA's report also said there was a major violation in a cover-up attempt by a former member of the men's basketball staff.

The probe also determined that former men's assistant Mark Morefield committed a major violation when he attempted to influence two AAU coaches to furnish the NCAA with false and misleading information regarding a series of text messages. Morefield resigned in July 2011.

There were also 405 impermissible calls made from nine other sports, including football.

Baylor has already imposed several sanctions on themselves, including removing two scholarships from the women's basketball team this past season and one scholarship from the men's basketball team for this past season and next season.
