Vancouver put in the kill shot with an Alex Burrows goal. Henrik Sedin got his third assist of the game through a great display of patience. He started out with the puck behind the net and ended up all the way out at the blue line. He threaded a pass to Burrows, who was right in front of the net, for an easy goal. Alex Goligoski had lost him and Burrows was wide open.

Kari Lehtonen was pulled for the rest of the game to get him some rest and Richard Bachman got put in.

Bachman got a rude welcoming as Maxim Lapierre scored the Canucks fifth goal just a minute after Bachman entered. Defenders let him skate free into the slot with the puck and he fired one by Bachman's glove hand.

The biggest news and only good news for the Stars in this period was that Reilly Smith got moved up to Jamie Benn's line and immediately made some plays. He hit the post and put some good pressure on net. He showed some good play and hopefully sticks with Benn the rest of the season.

Jake Dowell got a late goal in the period when he beat Schneider glove side.. It's only his second goal of the season.

It wasn't like the Stars were just thoroughly outplayed in this game. Cory Schneider was just amazing through the first two periods and the Stars just couldn't hang with the talent level of the Canucks. They had a lot of chances to score some more goals but just couldn't beat the Canucks goaltender.

Dallas plays their biggest most important game of the season tomorrow against the San Jose Sharks. A loss could drop them out of the playoffs.

Dallas finally (finally!!) got past Cory Schneider as Steve Ott scored five minutes into the period. Steve Ott won a face-off in the offensive zone and Jamie Benn put up a shot from Schneider's left. He made the save but gave up a fat rebound that Ott jumped on. Otter had his first rebound chance stopped but get the puck again and got it past Schneider to tie it up at 1-1.

Benn has been a big part of this game and was a major influence again in this goal. He leads the team with four shots on goal and has been buzzing all day around the net.

Dallas could have been up 3-1 but oh my word Cory Schneider is a great goalie. He made three absolutely amazing jaw dropping saves. He stoned Loui Eriksson from a foot away while the Stars had a two-on-one shorthanded opportunity and Vernon Fiddler point-blank in the slot.

Those saves were made even more important because the Canucks would score a power play goal later in the period. Adam Pardy tripped Dale Weise as he was in on goal to send the Canucks on the man-advantage. Sami Salo blasted a shot from the point and a screened Kari Lehtonen couldn't see the puck.

Andrew Alberts then scored a killer goal also from the back. Vancouver had a rush after Schneider made another big save and Alberts ended up with the puck to Lehtonen's right and with absolutely no one around him. He skated forward ten feet and blasted a shot by Lehtonen to put Vancouver up 3-1.

The first game of the biggest, most important and toughest back-to-back of the season and the Stars started out poorly.

Vancouver scored first in this game as Chris Higgins continued his evisceration of the Stars this season with a goal just six minutes into the period. It was his second goal and his fifth point in the series, which leads all Vancouver Canucks. Kari Lehtonen probably should have stopped the shot, but he was moving across the crease and the puck just slid under him.

Vancouver made a switch right before the game that surprised a few people. After stating throughout the day that Roberto Luongo would be the starter, Cory Schneider skated out to take his place between the pipes. It seems Luongo aggravated a neck muscle before the game and couldn't go. Schneider has been the better goalie between the two this season and he was the winner in the previous game between the two teams so it's a bad break for the Stars.

Dallas had a okay period but there wasn't a whole lot of good play. Only the top line, Jamie Benn and Ryan Garbutt really showed up to play and they had some good chances, but Schneider is just stopping everything. Dallas actually outshot Vancouver 13-7 in the period but just have to be glad that the score is only 1-0 in the Canucks favor with the way this has started.

The Pacific Division race has become one of the wildest playoff pushes in NHL history. The Stars are on top headed into Vancouver Friday night, but every game is now a must-win.

One of the wildest playoff races in NHL history continues tonight, as the Dallas Stars (89 points in 77 games played, first place Pacific Division, No. 3 seed in the Western Conference) battles a Vancouver team trying capture the No. 1 overall seed in the West, while trying to keep three rival Pacific teams at bay.

While Dallas battles the Canucks (the Stars are 2-1 against Vancouver this season, but lost their most recent match-up in Dallas 2-1), they'll try and hold off the Phoenix Coyotes (idle, 89 points in 78 games, second place Pacific Division, No. 7 seed in the Western Conference), Los Angeles Kings (at Edmonton Friday, 88 points in 77 games, third place Pacific Division, No. 8 seed in the Western Conference) and the San Jose Sharks (idle, 88 points in 78 games, fourth place Pacific Division, ninth place in Western Conference).

Got all that? With a Dallas win and a L.A. loss in regulation, the Stars could open up a two point lead in the insanely close Pacific Division race with just a handful of games remaining.
