While there's been little progress in scheduling future football games between Texas and Texas A&M, DeLoss Dodds, the Longhorns' athletic director and one of the main people seen as standing in the way of the continuation of the Lone Star Showdown, said before last night's 27-25 thriller that the two schools would meet again:

"It will be played again sometime, somewhere down the road," said Dodds before kickoff. "When and if, it will have to be the right situation. It will have to be positive for us."

Dodds has antagonized many in the Aggies' athletic department by pushing for the Longhorn Network and then saying it would be problematic to schedule Texas A&M before at least 2018 if the school moved to the SEC.

There's certainly logistical precedent for continuing the game, as three SEC schools (Georgia, Florida and South Carolina) play in-state rivals in the ACC (Georgia Tech, Florida State and Clemson) during "Rivalry Week".

For now, the best chance for the schools to meet would be in the Cotton Bowl, which matches a top team from the Big 12 and the SEC every year and would no doubt jump at the chance to host the 119th meeting between the two arch-rivals.

The final scheduled meeting between Texas and Texas A&M didn't disappoint as it came down to the last play of the game and a 40 yard field goal that brought a hush to the A&M crowd. Justin Tucker banged home the 40 yard kick to give Texas a come from behind 27-25 win.

Texas A&M scored the first nine points of the fourth quarter and briefly retook the lead on a Ryan Tannehill 16 yard touchdown pass to Jeff Fuller. Case McCoy then led the Longhorns on a 7 play, 48 yard drive that was aided by a costly late-hit personal foul penalty that set Texas up at their own 39 yard line. Case McCoy ripped off a 25 yard run to the A&M 23 and Tucker kicked the field goal as time expired.

McCoy completed 16 of 27 passing attempts for 110 yards. Malcolm Brown found little room to run the ball finishing with just 39 yards rushing on 17 carries. However, Texas had an interception return for a touchdown and had another score set up by an 81 yard punt return. They won the turnover battle with the Aggies by a 4-2 margin.

Ryan Tannehill struggled for much of the game and finished 20 of 49 for 224 yards with two touchdowns and three interceptions. Ben Malena ran for 83 yards and Jeff Fuller caught seven passes for 107 yards and a touchdown.

The Texas Longhorns have come roaring back behind its defense and special teams to grab a 24-16 lead over Texas A&M at the end of the third quarter.

The Texas defense has gotten really comfortable and that has been bad news for A&M quarterback Ryan Tannehill. Carrington Byndom stepped in front of a Tannehill pass and raced 58 yards for a Longhorns' touchdown to cut the deficit to just 16-14.

On their next possession, A&M moved the ball to midfield with the aid of a late hit penalty by the Longhorns. The eventually stalled and the Aggies punted to Quandre Diggs who fielded the punt at the 10 and sprinted 81 yards to the Texas A&M nine yard line. Three plays later, Justin Tucker's 23 yard field goal gave the Longhorns their first lead of the game 17-16.

Texas A&M's offensive self destruction continued on the next possession when Ryan Tannehill threw his third interception of the game. Six plays later, Cody Johnson punched it in from the one yard line to extend the Texas lead to 24-16.

When the dust had settled, Texas had scored 17unanswered points while Texas A&M had thrown two interceptions, had one returned for a touchdown and surrendered an 81 yard punt return that set up a field goal.

The match up between Texas and Texas A&M turned sloppy in the second as turnovers helped fuel some solid defensive play by both teams. When the smoked cleared, the Aggies took a 16-7 advantage heading into halftime.

Texas A&M struck first in the second when Randy Bullock kicked a career-long 52 yard field goal to extend the Aggies lead to 13-0. After a stop by the A&M defense, Dustin Harris muffed the ensuing punt to give the Longhorns their best field position of the day.

The Longhorns didn't waste any time reaching into their bag of tricks as Jaxon Shipley caught the Aggies defense off guard with a 41 yard scoring pass to Blaine Irby cutting the lead to 13-7. Ryan Tannehill threw an interception on Texas A&M's next play but Irby fumbled it right back. Bullock added his third field goal of the game to extend the lead to 16-7.

The offensive numbers aren't pretty for either team. Case McCoy is 9-16 for 79 yards in the first half. The Longhorns' running game has been non-existent with Malcolm Brown running the ball 10 times for just eight yards.

It has also been a struggle for Ryan Tannehill who has completed 7-22 for 82 yards with a touchdown and an interception. Ben Malena got the start for the injured Cyrus Gray and has 11 carries for 46 yards and a touchdown reception.

Texas A&M grabbed an early advantage in what could be the last match up between the Aggies and the Texas Longhorns in the near future. A&M scored on two of its first three possessions and leads 10-0 at the end of the first quarter.

In the early going, it is the Texas A&M defense that is making a statement forcing the Longhorns into five consecutive three and outs to start the game. Case McCoy is 3 for 6 passing the ball for 14 yards.

For the Texas Longhorns and Texas A&M Aggies, today's edition of their long-running rivalry may be the last one for a while. With the Aggies leaving the Big 12 for the SEC next year, the rivalry is likely to end, or at least cease, leaving college football without one of its longest-running series.

The rivalry's beginning, though, was almost as improbably as its end. SB Nation's C.J. Schexnayder has the story of the first Texas-Texas A&M football game.

"Had it not been for that they were physically unable to cope with the giants of the Varsity team, they would have stood a better showing for scoring," the anonymous sportswriter opined. "Every time the Varsity boys made a catch-as-can player, the A&M college boys went down to the dust like so many ten pins being knocked down."

The final score was Texas 38, Texas A&M 0 -- a score made even more humiliating by the fact touchdowns only earned four points in that era.

For the first time in over a month, the depth chart for Texas at the QB position has changed, as Case McCoy is now listed as the first of the two co-starters instead of David Ash for the Texas A&M game.

Ash had seemed to take control of the offense as a care-taker for a dominant rushing attack against Kansas and Texas Tech, but injuries to the Longhorns four primary playmakers -- RB's Fozzy Whittaker, Malcolm Brown and Joe Bergeron as well as WR Jaxon Shipley -- put more pressure on the QB position.

Ash, a true freshmen who did not even participate in spring practices, was unable to hold up to the challenge, and the Longhorns scored only three offensive points against Missouri.

Needing a shot in the arm for an anemic passing attack, head coach Mack Brown benched Ash for McCoy in the second half of Texas 17-13 loss to Kansas State last week, which the Longhorns losing despite giving up only 121 yards defensively to the Wildcats.

McCoy threw Texas' only touchdown pass in three weeks to TE Blaine Irby, but came up short in the fourth quarter, finishing with 80 yards on 7/16 attempts.

Since taking over from Garrett Gilbert early in the season, Ash has struggled with accuracy and comfort in the pocket while McCoy has struggled with his deep ball. Combine both young QB's strengths into one player and you'd have an All-American.

As it is, the inability of either to take control of the team this season means the QB position will likely be up for grabs in the spring game, with the notoriously fickle Texas fan-base already casting their eye on highly-touted recruit Connor Brewer of Arizona.

A young Texas team is an underdog in what could be the last regular season football game between the two schools for a long time.

In the 118th football game between the two biggest public schools in the state of Texas, the Texas Longhorns are +8 road underdogs against the Texas A&M Aggies.

But history has shown you can throw out records when these two bitter rivals meet, never more so than this year, with the Aggies leaving the rivalry behind in their controversial move to the SEC.

Ten games into the season, the QB situation in Austin is still unsettled, as Mack Brown benched struggling freshmen David Ash against Kansas State for sophomore Case McCoy, who led an ultimately unsuccessful comeback in the Longhorns 17-13 defeat.

The Texas offense has yet to recover from injuries to RB's Fozzy Whittaker, Malcolm Brown, Joe Bergeron and WR Jaxon Shipley, scoring only one touchdown in the last two weeks.

The Longhorns defense, meanwhile, has stepped up, with senior LB Emmanuel Acho emerging as a star, while highly-touted recruits in the defensive line (DE Jackson Jeffcoat) and secondary (CB's Quandre Diggs and Carrington Byndom) have started to live up to their considerable hype.

They'll be tested against an explosive Texas A&M offense, the best passing attack Texas has faced since losing to Oklahoma State over a month ago. Senior QB Ryan Tannehill has established himself as a legitimate NFL prospect throwing to WR's Jeff Fuller and Ryan Swope, and the Aggies have averaged 40.9 points a game, 10th best in the nation.

But now that both of Texas A&M's top runners, Christine Michael and Cyrus Gray, are possibly out with injuries, the Aggies are more one-dimensional than they've been all season.

A win would be huge for both six-win teams as they try to ascend the Big 12's bowl order, but it would be far bigger for their fans, as they'll have bragging rights on their friends, neighbors and in-laws for a long time to come.
