Notes from Jason Garrett’s introductory press conference:

- He is concerned with getting the team ready to play the Giants.

- Tangible success equals winning football games (which does not match Jerry’s definition)

- He’s always had a positive, candid relationship with Jerry.

- The Cowboys will focus on the process: doing the right things in meetings and in practice every day.

- There will be noticeable changes in style and in the team right from the start.

- He believes in being very clear about individual expectations and holding each player accountable to those expectations. (Bingo!)

- He did not have to be persuaded to take the job.

“I would like to express my sincere appreciation to the fans of the Cowboys and to the entire Jones family for all of the support that we received here in Dallas. I would also like to thank our coaches and players for their loyalty and dedication.

“I told the team today that I have been proud to be a part of their family, and that will never change. I have enjoyed the privilege and responsibility of representing this franchise as its head coach.

“I am disappointed in the results of this season to this point, but I am also very proud of what our team and our players accomplished in the previous three years. In good times and difficult times, our players stuck together and never lost hold of their belief in each other and the strong team bond that they have shared. Family and coaching football have always defined my life and I will always be grateful for my experiences here with the Dallas Cowboys.”

Jason Garrett isn’t a popular guy in the #Cowboys locker room. Maybe that’s good thing. Players loved Wade Phillips, didn’t perform for him.

Notes from Jerry Jones in his press conference:

- ‘This is not an admission of defeat or finality for this season.’

- Players will be evaluated by hard play for the rest of the season. He wants to see players who play ‘winning’ football and play for their team, who prepare and play smart.

- He is concerned about the next eight games, not the long term, in regard to his head coach.

- Jason Garrett has the right ‘temperament’ and ‘disposition’ to improve the culture. He has produced as a coordinator, has good organizational and leadership skills. He’s smart.

- Paul Pasqualoni, the new defensive coordinator, has the right disposition for this job.

- He changed his mind on this move since Saturday.

- He wants to see stats translated to wins.

- Once the defense faltered, Wade’s value was diminished. He doesn’t regret not making a decision sooner, but he believed that the defense would adjust and improve. It never did.

- Garrett could get the job long term if he shows significant, tangible improvement. Tangible improvement will be measured by whether the team shows extraordinary desire to win, not necessarily wins.

- (getting choked up) The accountability falls with the players, after they failed Wade.

- Seeing pitiful crowds got to him. He respects the tradition of the Cowboys.

- He doesn’t know how to quantify the leeway Garrett will have to make decisions. He’ll do what gives the team the best chance to win.

- It’s fair to ask whether this is actually a talented roster.

- It is appropriate within NFL rules to promote the assistant head coach to interim head coach, given the Cowboys’ process.

- He doesn’t want to speak to whether he considered other options.

As everyone visiting this site should know, the Dallas Cowboys fired Wade Phillips today, promoting Jason Garrett into the role as interim head coach for the remainder of the season.

While the interim tag could be removed if Garrett is able to prove himself over the remainder of the season, ProFootballTalk’s Mike Florio reports that the NFL’s “Rooney Rule” could cause problems for the Cowboys this offseason. The Rooney Rule, for those unaware, was established in 2003 and requires NFL teams to interview minority candidates for head coaching and senior football operations opportunities.

Florio notes that “if Jason Garrett is given too strong of a wink-nod that he’ll be the guy in 2011, it will be harder to attract at least one minority candidate to interview for the job.”

Meanwhile, none of the names that have hit the radar screen — John Fox, Jon Gruden, Jeff Fisher, Bill Cowher, Mike Holmgren — would permit compliance with the Rooney Rule. If it appears that he has zeroed in on a non-minority candidate before he has interviewed a minority candidate, there’s a chance that no minority candidates will agree to interview for the job.

It will be interesting to see if Garrett is able to prove himself over the course of the rest of the season or if Florio is on to something once the offseason comes around.

Jay Glazer has news on Wade Phillips’ replacement as defensive coordinator. It will be former Syracuse coach Paul Pasqualoni. Pasqualoni had been the defensive line coach for Dallas and was regarded as a prime candidate to take the head coaching position.

Paul pasquiloni new defensive coordinator in dallas w wade gone

Pasqualoni is regarded as a tough coach, who does not let mistakes slide. That would be a skill many Cowboys fans will be happy to see. He joined Bill Parcells in Dallas in 2005 before leaving for Miami in 2008. His return to Dallas this season appeared to be ill-timed, until this promotion.

The Cowboys have not said whether Jason Garrett will continue in his role as offensive coordinator. That issue will likely be addressed in the team’s 4:00 press conference.

According to Ed Werder appearing on ESPN NFL Live, Miles Austin says that the failure of the Cowboys this season falls on the players shoulders, not the coaching staff. This is contrary to the opinion of Jay Ratliff and Martellus Bennett, who said that the failure was “50/50” on the players and coaches.

Austin has enjoyed a productive season thus far, even during the Cowboys miserable season. Austin has 45 receptions for 657 yards – but only has two touchdowns.

Austin’s production was bound to decrease slightly with the addition of Dez Bryant to the Dallas receiving corps. The injury to starting quarterback Tony Romo hasn’t helped. Austin did have 7 catches for 117 yards against the Jaguars with Jon Kitna at quarterback but had only two receptions for 16 yards in the blowout loss against the Packers on Sunday night.

Austin is on pace for 90 receptions and 1,314 yards with four touchdowns for the season. It will be interesting to see what happens to his – and the other Cowboys skill players – production under Jason Garrett as head coach.

Per Ed Werder of ESPN, players on the Dallas Cowboys were shocked that Wade Phillips was relieved of his head coaching duties on Monday.

Werder spoke to Martellus Bennett who said that the failure of the Cowboys so far this season was a “shared failure” and that the coaching staff isn’t to take full blame.

As of 3:50 PM EST, Jason Garrett was addressing the team in a team meeting as the new interim head coach of the Dallas Cowboys.

Werder went onto speculate that Jerry Jones did not want to head into New York next week and take on the New York Giants on national television looking like they have the past couple of weeks. The Cowboys haven’t even been competitive the past two weeks, losing in blowouts to the Jacksonville Jaguars and Green Bay Packers. The thought by Jones, according to Werder, is that the team will respond to the coaching change and play better in New York next week and perhaps even upset the Giants.
