According to injury guru Will Carroll, the Dallas Cowboys are not expected to place injured quarterback Tony Romo on injured reserve.

Romo suffered a broken clavicle (collarbone) last night after being hit by Giants linebacker Michael Boley. On Monday, a CT scan showed that surgery would not be required for Romo.

Romo is expected to be out for six to eight weeks. With the Cowboys record sitting at 1-5, and with Tony Romo out for up to two months, the playoffs look like an unattainable goal.

Dallas may decide to place Romo on injured reserve in the coming weeks. Placing the injured quarterback on the IR list would make him ineligible to return for the season and would show the Cowboys staff basically waving the white flag on their 2010 campaign.

Jon Kitna will face the tough task of getting the Cowboys back into the playoff hunt. Before appearing last night, Kitna last played in a regular season NFL game in 2008 when he was with the Lions. In relief of the injured Romo, Kitna completed 16 of 33 passes with a pair of touchdowns and was sacked three times.

Tony Romo’s broken bone wasn’t the only injury trouble for the Cowboys on Monday night. Terence Newman was hurt in what was reported as an issue with cartilage in his rib cage after his return of a first quarter interception and played through pain the rest of the way.

Newman had a CT scan Tuesday and has been diagnosed with a rib muscle injury but should play Sunday.

Montrae Holland suffered a groin strain and left the game but is also expected to be ready for next week. Kyle Kosier, the man he’s relieving, is not expected to be healthy for that game, but Todd Archer has this update.

Kyle Kosier, the starter, said he would be back for the Jaguars’ game, but he was still in a walking boot on Monday. If he and Holland can’t play, then the Cowboys could go with undrafted rookie Phil Costa.

Jason Hatcher also strained his groin, but in a more serious fashion. He is expected to miss four to six weeks.

A CT scan Monday revealed that Tony Romo’s broken collarbone will not require surgery. Typical nonsurgical recovery time for this injury is 6-8 weeks, which would allow him to return for somewhere between two and four games.

Calvin Watkins reports that he has been told that Romo’s return should be expected at closer to the eight week timeframe. Romo said that he was dazed by the hit and that the shock made breathing difficult for a moment. A few minutes later he attempted to return to the game.

“I tried lifting my shoulder and it hurt like heck, but I was like, OK, it will just keep getting better,” said Romo, who suffered the same injury to his right shoulder when he was a teenager. “The adrenaline of the game will allow me to [play], it’s my left shoulder, I don’t need to use it too much. I will figure out a way what I can handle when I’m out there, but that was before I knew it was broken.”

Tony Romo has reportedly broken his left clavicle (collarbone) on a hit by New York Giants linebacker Michael Boley. Boley hit Romo as he threw and drove him to the ground. Romo was unable to brace his fall, landing directly on his left shoulder.

This injury is thought to take eight to ten weeks to heal, meaning that Romo could miss the entirety of the season. An eight week recovery would allow him to play the last two games of the season, while ten weeks would just miss the last game.

Romo's return may not matter much, as the Cowboys have blown a 13 point lead to trail 24-20 at half. If they lose, Dallas will move to 1-5, which would all but eliminate them from playoff contention, particularly without their quarterback.

Romo had completed five of seven passes with a touchdown for the night before his exit. For the season he had thrown 11 TD with 7 INT and a QB rating of 94.
