The umpiring crew for the 2010 World Series between the San Francisco Giants and Texas Rangers has been announced.

As is the standard in the playoffs, there will be six umpires. The standard four at each base and then the other two cover the left and right field foul lines. The six-man umpiring crew will have Sam Holbrook, Bill Miller, John Hirschbeck, Gary Darling, Mike Winters and Jeff Kellogg.

This will hopefully be the last time the umpires are mentioned aside from the introductions prior to each game. This postseason has been marred by missed calls by umpires ranging from balls and strikes to missed tags.

New York was the beneficiary of a blown call in Game 6 of the ALCS after Nick Swisher was struck in the shin by a pitch, causing the ball to change paths and squirt by Bengie Molina, allowing Alex Rodriguez to score. Home plate umpire Brian Gorman denied that Swisher was struck by the ball. Had he ruled correctly that Swisher was hit by the ball, Rodriguez would have been forced to remain at third. Rodriguez’ run tied the game at 1 but luckily for the Rangers (and baseball) Texas would respond quickly and break the game open to win the pennant.

None of the umpires involved in the ALCS will be umpiring the World Series.

On an appearance on SIRIUS XM’s Mad Dog Radio, Colby Lewis said that he expects to start Game 3 of the World Series when the World Series shifts back to Arlington.

Said Lewis:

Um, I think it was, I don’t know if it was announced yesterday or not but I’m almost positive I’m going to be going in Game 3, so, first game back here. Yeah, it’s going to be a lot of fun. I mean, I don’t know, it’s just a situation where hopefully we can snag that first one with Cliff [Lee] going and, of course, C.J. [Wilson] has been awesome for us this year and I know he’s going to go out there and give us a quality start. Hopefully we can take two from them and come back here and take two out of three and finish it up.

It had been unknown if Wilson or Lewis would start Game 2 until now. Still, there has been no official announcement made by Ron Washington and the Rangers staff. If Wilson goes in Game 2, that means the Rangers will have their ALDS 1-2-3 lined up with Lee, Wilson and Lewis going in the first three games.

It has not been announced that Tommy Hunter will start Game 4 but he is expected to make his third postseason start, keeping Derek Holland in long relief out of the bullpen.

The Texas Rangers have not publicly decided on their second, third or fourth rotation spots or the last two bullpen spots for the World Series. They do know one thing: Cliff Lee will start Game One. After that, either Colby Lewis or C.J. Wilson could start the second game.

The team is expected to start Tommy Hunter once again, since they now know what to expect out of a Hunter start and a Derek Holland relief appearance, while a role reversal is more unpredictable. Hunter lasted 4.0 and 3.1 innings in his two Game Four starts, allowing five combined runs. Holland, meanwhile, relieved in both of those games and lasted 4.0 and 3.2 innings, allowing two total runs. He also made 0.2 and 2.0 inning relief appearances, yielding one more run. His overall line is 10.1 IP, 9 H, 1 HR, 3 BB, 8 K, with a 2.61 ERA.

Evan Grant says that Texas is considering four relievers for the last two spots.

In addition, the Rangers are likely to go with three lefties in the bullpen, though the team is uncertain whether the third will be Clay Rapada (a one-batter specialist) or Michael Kirkman. San Francisco doesn’t feature as many tough left-handed hitters and switch-hitters as the Yankees did, so the club is more likely to either activate right-hander Mark Lowe or reactivate right-hander Dustin Nippert.

While Lowe has some electric stuff, he has not pitched in any real significant big league situations since June due to injuries. Nippert has been a part of the Rangers bullpen all year, but is also prone to the walk.

Evan Grant reports that Vladimir Guerrero will start in the outfield in the first two World Series games in San Francisco. Guerrero played 18 games this season in the outfield, but his defensive skills have eroded some with age.

"You can bet we will figure out a way to get Vlad in the starting lineup," Washington said Sunday during a media availability. "We are not going to take his bat out of the lineup."

Guerrero had the hit that put the Rangers into the World Series, but he has struggled, posting a .267/.283/.333 line in the postseason. To play Guerrero, Ron Washington must bench David Murphy against two right-handed pitchers, Tim Lincecum and Matt Cain. Murphy hit .311/.388/.509 in the second half of the season and was even better against righties, but he followed that with a sub-par .200/.333/.400 postseason line.

With Guerrero in the lineup, Texas will have Murphy and Jeff Francoeur available to pinch hit late in games.
