Arlington, TX (Sports Network) – David Murphy’s game-winning single in the bottom of the 10th inning lifted the Texas Rangers to a 4-3 victory over the New York Yankees in the opener of a two-game series between division leaders at Rangers Ballpark.

Murphy also hit a two-run homer for Texas, which saw its brief two-game skid halted and won for the fourth time in its last six games overall. The Rangers maintained their comfortable lead atop the AL West standings.

Alex Rodriguez homered for the Yankees, who entered this series after splitting four at home with arch-rival Boston. Nick Swisher posted two hits with an RBI in the losing effort. New York saw its lead in the AL East trimmed to one-half game after the Tampa Bay Rays defeated Detroit earlier Tuesday.

Michael Young led off the bottom of the 10th inning with an infield single off of Mariano Rivera (3-2). Josh Hamilton followed with a base hit to shallow right field. After Vladimir Guerrero’s groundout moved both runners ahead one base, Nelson Cruz was intentionally walked to loaded the bases.

Murphy then stepped to the plate and delivered the game-winning single into right field as the Rangers celebrated on the field.

Neftali Feliz (3-2), who tossed a pair of scoreless relief innings in the ninth and 10th, picked up the win.

The Rangers opened the scoring in the fourth inning. Young led off with a single and moved to second on a fly out off the bat of Hamilton. When Cruz stroked a double to left-center field with two outs, Young crossed the plate.

In the top of the fifth, New York knotted the contest on a two-out rally. Derek Jeter walked and scored when Swisher hit a double to right-center.

New York moved in front with a run in the top of the sixth. Austin Kearns doubled with one out and after Lance Berkman walked, Texas brought in reliever Darren O’Day. The first batter O’Day faced was Francisco Cervelli, whose base hit to center field brought home Kearns.

However, with runners on first and second and still one out, the Yankees failed to add more. Darren Oliver replaced O’Day and struck out Brett Gardner before Robinson Cano, a pinch-hitter in the game due to a fever, grounded out.

Texas used a two-out, two-run blast to move ahead in the home portion of the sixth. Guerrero reached first base on a fielder’s choice and trotted home when Murphy drilled his eight homer of the season off the facade in the upper deck in right-center field for a 3-2 Texas edge.

Alexi Ogando pitched a 1-2-3 seventh for the Rangers, but Frank Francisco started the eighth and yielded a solo blast to leadoff batter Rodriguez. It was the 601st career home run for Rodriguez, also his 18th of the year, and it tied the score.

Game Notes

New York Yankees first baseman Mark Teixeira missed the game — and could miss another — to be with his wife for the birth of their child…Both teams produced nine hits…New York starting pitcher A.J. Burnett allowed three runs on six hits with four strikeouts and two walks over seven innings of work. Texas southpaw C.J. Wilson pitched 5 1/3 frames and gave up two runs on five hits with five strikeouts.

Per Anthony Andro, Ian Kinsler will not be returning to the Rangers lineup until late August or even early September.

The All-Star second baseman had an MRI Tuesday, which showed improvement in his strained left groin. But there is also still inflammation there, and he likely won’t try to swing a bat for at least a week.

Kinsler is batting .298 on the year with a .387 OBP. He’s appeared in only 76 of the Rangers 112 games so far this year.

(Sports Network) - The New York Yankees visit Arlington this evening for a potential playoff preview, as they begin a brief two-game series against the Texas Rangers at Rangers Ballpark.

New York enters this series holding a 1 1/2-game edge on the Tampa Bay Rays for first place in the American League East, while the Rangers, who are seeking their first postseason berth since 1999, own an eight-game lead over the Oakland Athletics in the American League West.

The Yankees, though, enter tonight's tilt after splitting a four-game series with the Boston Red Sox that culminated with a 2-1 loss in Monday's finale at Yankee Stadium.

Mark Teixeira clubbed his 26th homer of the season, but struck out with a runner in scoring position to end the game for the Yankees, who also had the bases loaded with no outs in the seventh.

Phil Hughes (13-5) grinded through six frames, throwing 114 pitches. The right-hander yielded two runs on six hits with one walk and struck out three.

"They're still a very good team," Hughes said about the Red Sox. "They have a very good rotation. We would have liked to do better than a split, but reality is they are still a very good team and they're going to be right there in the hunt."

Tonight, New York will pin its hopes tonight on inconsistent right-hander A.J. Burnett, who was scratched from his scheduled start on Sunday because of back spasms. Burnett will be trying to bounce back from an awful showing last Monday against Toronto, which pounded him for eight runs and eight hits in just 4 2/3 innings.

Burnett, who had won three of his four starts before the loss to the Blue Jays, is 9-9 on the year with a 4.93 ERA.

He tossed seven scoreless innings to beat the Rangers the last time he faced them, however, and is 4-3 lifetime against them with a 3.58 ERA in 10 games (nine starts) against them.

Burnett, though, may be without a significant part of the lineup tonight, as Teixeira remained in New York to be with his wife, who is expecting the couple's third child. Following a prolonged slump that marred most of his first half, Teixeira has been the Yankees' most productive hitter in the second half. Since the break, Teixeira is hitting .276 with nine homers and 25 RBI.

The Yankees are unsure how many games -- if any -- Teixeira would miss.

Texas, meanwhile, will counter with lefty C.J. Wilson, who is also looking to rebound from a shaky outing his last time out. Wilson did not get a decision on Wednesday in Seattle, but surrendered four runs and six hits in three innings of his team's 11-6 win. He is 10-5 on the year with a 3.30 ERA.

Wilson lost to the Yankees back on April 16 and is 0-3 lifetime against them. This, though, will be only his second-ever start against them.

The Rangers return home tonight after a 4-5 road trip that saw them lose the last two games of their three-game set with the A's, including a 3-2 setback on Sunday at the Coliseum.

Josh Hamilton and Nelson Cruz each drove in a run for the Rangers, while Colby Lewis was in line for the win after yielding one run, three hits and three walks in six innings, but Darren Oliver (0-1) gave up two runs while recording just one out.

The Yankees swept the Rangers in three games in the Bronx earlier in the year and are 15-4 in the last 19 visits to Arlington, where they will also visit for a three-game set from Sept. 10-12.
