Dallas didn't take time to mess around in this game. Jamie Benn scored just 26 seconds into the game on a wrister from the blue line. Miikka Kiprusoff really should have stopped the puck, but his hand-eye coordination failed him. He raised his glove hand to catch the puck and watched as it flew right by him into the top right corner of the net.
Unfortunately for Dallas, Calgary came back quickly in this one. Trevor Daley took a high sticking call (a bogus one in my opinion as Alex Tanguay held Daley's stick and waved it towards his face) and put the Flames on the power play. Olli Jokinen would receive a pass from Lee Stempniak and find himself all alone in the slot. A quick shot put the puck by Lehtonen to tie the game at 1-1.
Benn was extremely determined to end the Flames season and came out on fire right out of the gate. He had a goal and four shots on net in his first three shifts on ice.
Dallas had two power plays in this period but were unable to capitalize on them. The Flames actually had the best chance as Alex Tanguay had a shorthanded breakaway chance after Daley couldn't handle a wild Steve Ott pass at the point. Tanguay tried to go high on Lehtonen and missed the net.
Eric Nystrom had to leave the ice after suffering a lower body injury in the first minutes of the game. He crashed into Miikka Kiprusoff on a rush to the net and may have cut his leg. Whatever happened to him, he's out for the rest of the game.
