It's been a tough start for the Dallas Stars in this game. Riding their home crowd, the Winnipeg Jets have dominated the run of play for the entire period and got their goal early in this one from Nik Antropov.
Antropov scored 2:21 into the period as a result of hard work on the boards from the Jets and a great shot. Brenden Morrow and Steve Ott were outworked on the boards and Antti Miettinen and the former Star got the puck to Antropov in the left face-off circle. Antropov fired a wicked wrister that went right over Richard Bachman's right shoulder into the net.
Bachman's short stature hurt him on that shot as he just couldn't reach the puck with his shoulder shrug.
Dallas didn't really have any spell of good possession and pressure on Winnipeg in the first period. They had to spend all their time defending right in front of the net. The Jets had numerous little tip-in chances right in front of Bachman that he was able to stop. Passes across Bachman's crease are a popular thing so far. Aside from that one goal, Bachman has been excellent.
The Stars also lost Philip Larsen to an injury midway through the period when he crashed awkwardly into the boards. He was in a puck battle and got his left foot stuck into the boards when he crashed into it. It looked like he went off the ice with some knee trouble. A team without Sheldon Souray was down to five defensemen for the rest of the period and perhaps the reset of the game.
