NBA Free Agency 2012: Elton Brand Wants To Be Signed By Dallas Mavericks

Veteran Elton Brand was a victim of an amnesty cut by the Philadelphia 76ers, who shed Brand's remaining $18 million contract off their books, but left the 33-year-old guard homeless. Now he's trying to land in Dallas, according to NBA.com's David Aldridge:

The Mavericks, the source close to Brand said, provide the best fit among the teams under the cap. They are well-coached and have an obvious superstar in Dirk Nowitzki. The Mavericks missed out on free-agent guard Deron Williams, their top target, who re-signed with the Nets. But Dallas made several moves to bolster its roster on Wednesday, agreeing to terms with free-agent center Chris Kaman on a one-year deal.

Any team that wants Brand, provided he clears waivers, would submit a bid of $1.35, the veteran minimum, for the one year remaining on Brand's contract. Whatever bid would land Brand, that amount would come off of the $18 million figure that the Sixers owe. The Mavs have just traded for Darren Collison, who could likely start at the point this season, clearing up their search for a big backcourt move, and possibly opening the window for Brand to be signed as a backup to Dirk Nowitzki.
