A first-round draft pick for the Mavericks might not be available for the season opener as Jared Cunningham sprained his thumb during Monday's practice, according to Tim MacMahon of ESPN Dallas.
A guard from Oregon State University, Cunningham was selected with the No. 24 pick in the NBA Draft by the Cavaliers before he was traded to the Mavs. While his offseason progression was slowed by hamstring and knee injuries that withheld him from summer league, Cunningham did play some in preseason.
In nine preseason games, Cunningham played a combined 81 minutes, in which he scored 27 points, recorded six assists and pulled down seven rebounds. However, he turned the ball over nine times for the Mavericks and racked up four personal fouls in just 14 minutes on Friday against the Bobcats.
He wasn't expected to play too much for the Mavericks, although the injury is a hit for the depth of the team as Delonte West was waived on Monday after receiving a pair of suspensions during the preseason.
