The Dallas Cowboys' 2012 preseason schedule concludes Wednesday evening at home, when Jason Garrett's squad takes on the Miami Dolphins for a final tune-up before the regular season.

The Cowboys enter with a 2-1 record in exhibition play, and will opt to use their fourth and final preseason game as a resting period for a number of starters, as will a majority of other franchises around the league. The low workload for so many top players should once again make things interesting for guys hoping to avoid Friday's final roster cut, however, as more than just a handful of notable names are trying to hang on.

One of those players happens to be former fourth-round Cowboys draft pick Stephen McGee, a Texas A&M product snatched up by Jerry Jones and company in the spring of 2009. McGee is currently battling with Rudy Carpenter for the team's No. 3 quarterback spot behind starter Tony Romo and backup Kyle Orton, and may need a strong performance on Wednesday to avoid being released.

"It's the most reps I always get all year," McGee told the Houston Chronicle about his upcoming showcase game. "It's a great chance to go out there and, hopefully, put a good tape out there."

Even though he has yet to lead the offense on a touchdown drive this preseason, McGee still appears to be in the favor of Dallas coaches almost entirely for his above-average athletic ability for the position. Cowboys coach Jason Garrett doesn't appear to be in a rush to throw in the towel on McGee with two experienced quarterbacks ahead of him on the depth chart, but a situation may arise where the team feels it necessary to carry only two signal callers.

"We knew Stephen's arc was one that was going to be developmental when we drafted him," Garrett said. "But we liked him so much as a person, we felt we could give him time."

Game Date/Time: Wednesday, Aug. 29; 7:30 p.m. CDT
