NFL Free Agency 2012: Cowboys Sign QB Rudy Carpenter

The Dallas Cowboys former practice squad QB Rudy Carpenter off waivers from the Tampa Bay Buccaneers on Thursday.

Carpenter, who was with the team in 2009 after being undrafted out of Arizona State, spent the last two seasons in Tampa Bay shuttling back and forth between their practice squad and active roster.

With the signing of Kyle Orton earlier in the off-season to be Tony Romo's backup, bringing Carpenter into the fold seems to be an indication that the team has lost confidence in third-string QB Stephen McGee of Texas A&M.

McGee, a fourth round pick in 2009, hasn't put up terrible statistics in his first three years in Dallas. In spot duty, he's passed for 420 yards while completing 56% of his passes with 3 TD's and no INT's on a QB rating of 82.4.

The 6'2 215 Carpenter has thrown an NFL pass, but he was a talented, if inconsistent, star at Arizona State, where he started 31 consecutive games from 2005-2008.
