Rob Ryan To Have Lap-Band Surgery For Weight Reduction, Cowboys Confirm

Dallas Cowboys defensive coordinator Rob Ryan will undergo lap-band surgery in an effort to reduce his weight, the team confirmed Wednesday morning. Ryan's brother, New York Jets head coach Rex Ryan, told media at the NFL owners meetings in Florida as well.

ESPN Dallas quoted Cowboys head coach Jason Garrett as saying the procedure was elective, not mandatory:

...Garrett said Wednesday morning Rob Ryan is currently undergoing the preparations for the lap-band procedure and is at his Valley Ranch office every day. The procedure is not because of any life-threatening situation and it's being described as health related.

Rex Ryan had the same procedure in 2010, and it's speculated that Rob Ryan is undergoing the surgery to reduce his weight for purposes of eventually becoming a head coach. The procedure involves a plastic band being inserted around the stomach to shrink it and curb the patient's appetite.
