NFL Draft 2011 News: Cowboys Discuss Their Draft

The Cowboys held their post draft press conference Saturday and discussed how they felt things went in Jason Garrett’s first draft, what they see in their new players, and how they expect to fill out their roster in free agency. Jerry Jones was his usual positive self and spent a lot of his time touting Garrett’s performance in the draft room. He also said that he expects to see the NFL lockout ended and football played this season but that the NFL has to fix its problems.

Garrett said that he felt like the Cowboys had managed to improve the talent on their offensive line. He said that both Tyron Smith and fourth rounder David Arkin fit what the club looks for physically and in being ‘the right kind of guy’ – a theme from Garrett over the weekend.

Stephen Jones said that the Cowboys do intend to be active in pursuing defensive players in free agency and that they may add something on the offensive side of the ball as well, but he cautioned that they had to know what the system would be before they could fine tune their plans. If the players win in court, the league is likely to spend 2011 under a similar system as 2010, where players are not unrestricted free agents until after their sixth year of service. If a new agreement is made in time for the season, players will likely once again be free agents after four years.
