2011 NFL Draft: Cowboys Select DeMarco Murray In Third Round

The Cowboys have added a runner to their stable, drafting DeMarco Murray with the No. 71 overall pick in the third round. Murray was ranked at 84 on Rick Gosselin’s Top 100 prospects list.

Murray further clouds the Cowboys running back situation. Felix Jones has struggled to stay on the field and looked slower with added weight in 2010. Tashard Choice was unable to force his way into the lineup despite struggles from those ahead of him on the depth chart. Marion Barber carries a huge contract and has seen his numbers regress to the point that Murray appears to be a replacement for him. However Murray has not excelled as a between-the-tackles runner, and that would be the primary need.

Jerry Jones has frequently complained that none of the top three backs could contribute on coverage and blocking special teams. Murray might be a returner but is not likely to fix that issue.
