The Cowboys once again stayed in their spot at No. 40 and selected North Carolina linebacker Bruce Carter.
Mike Mayock and Mel Kiper both saw Carter as a mid-first round talent before he injured his knee in November and required surgery to repair his ACL. He has been cleared for football activities, but the Cowboys must view the pick’s value as future years.
Carter figures to push Anthony Spencer at one of the outside linebacker spots or Keith Brooking inside. He also gives defensive coordinator Rob Ryan another pass rushing weapon to use across his second line.
Carter’s selection was announced at the draft in New York City by Super Bowl winner Charles Haley.
