No, There Wasn't Anything To The Sean Payton To Cowboys Rumors

Yes, Sean Payton is moving to DFW. No, he's not going to be the general manager (or anything else) of the Cowboys. As Ed Werder detailed yesterday, the Paytons have always been interested in living in Dallas long term, but considering the dynamics of the city back when he was hired as head coach, the Saints wanted them in New Orleans.

The Paytons will enroll their children in school in their new Texas neighborhood. Payton became interested in Vaquero when he lived in nearby Southlake while working as an assistant coach under Bill Parcells with the Cowboys.

Payton estimates that flying on a private plane is 90 minutes door to door from his office at the Saints complex to the family's new home, which he believes allows him to remain committed to the Saints while moving his family to the area where he and Beth intend to eventually retire.

When Payton was offered the Saints head-coaching position originally, the family considered this exact setup but owner Tom Benson insisted on the entire Payton family living in New Orleans.

While the notion that Payton would be interested at this point in his career in management rather than coaching is at least a little intriguing, anyone who knows anything about Jerry Jones knows that this would be the most surprising move of his tenure with the Cowboys. Even when he hired Bill Parcells out of despiration, he maintained the general manager title and final say on transactions.
