After four seasons on the Hilltop, June Jones has turned around the SMU football program, but it's still in the shadow of its former SWC rivals in the Big 12.
The Mustangs will have a chance to change that on Sunday, when they travel to Waco to play the Baylor Bears, who are entering a transition year of their own in 2012.
Robert Griffin III is now in Washington, so Art Briles is handing the keys to his high-powered spread offense to Nick Florence, a 6'1 205 senior who has spent the last few seasons as Griffin's understudy. His only action in 2011 came in the second half against Texas Tech, when he stepped in for an injured Griffin to complete 9-of-12 passes for 151 yards and 2 TD's.
There's just as many questions about the signal caller on the other side of the field, former Texas QB Garrett Gilbert, who is hoping for a second chance after flaming out in Austin as one of the top recruits in the nation.
Baylor enters the game as a 12-point favorite, but with so many questions about both teams heading into the 2012 season, that may be more a reflection of national name recognition than anything else.
The game will be televised on Fox Sports Net at 5:30 p.m. CT on Sunday, September 2.
