2012 NFL Mock Draft: Seattle Seahawks Could Trade Up For RG3

With the teams at No. 2 and No. 3 already heavily invested in young first-round QB's, nearly half a dozen NFL organizations have been linked to the Baylor star in pre-draft trade rumors.

With USC's Matt Barkley and OU's Landry Jones deciding to return for their senior season, there's a big drop-off in available QB prospects after Stanford's Andrew Luck and Baylor's Robert Griffin III.

While there have been some rumblings that Griffin might overtake Luck on draft boards in the same way that he did in the Heisman race, the Stanford product is still penciled in as the No. 1 overall selection of the Indianapolis Colts.

That leaves an interesting decision for the two teams directly behind Indianapolis, St. Louis and Minnesota, both of whom have invested high first-round draft picks on QB's (Sam Bradford and Christian Ponder respectively) in the last two seasons.

In the latest mock draft from SB Nation, Ryan Van Biber has new Rams coach Jeff Fisher taking USC OT Matt Kalil with the No. 2 pick, which would leave the Vikings auctioning off the rights to draft Griffin to the highest bidder:

3. Seattle Seahawks, Robert Griffin III, QB, Baylor (Projected trade: from Vikings)

This is not necessarily a prediction; I'm just exploring the possibility. With Washington and Miami finding solutions elsewhere, and Cleveland waffling on trading their picks, the next best fit for RGIII would be the Seahawks. Minnesota would be more than willing to trade down. Seattle is a good landing spot for Griffin with a pretty good roster to make the transition easier for a rookie quarterback. Hell, he could even sit for a while behind Tarvaris Jackson.

The Washington Redskins have been one of the other teams linked to Griffin in pre-draft discussion, but there is increasing talk that they would rather save their draft picks in order to make a run at Peyton Manning if the Colts decide to release him.

Which means that, as of right now, Griffin is one of many dominoes waiting for the resolution of the Manning soap opera in Indianapolis.
