Friday night's South Region semifinals tip off just after 6:30 p.m. CT, with two protected seeds vying for a spot in the Elite Eight. Then, upstart Florida Gulf Coast faces in-state rival Florida in the night cap.

The tournament's opening weekend is over and 16 teams remain in the hunt for a national championship. On Friday, four of those teams will play in the South regional semifinal with the hope of advancing to the Elite Eight.

No. 1 seed Kansas gets things started shortly after 6:30 p.m. CT. The Jayhawks will go up against No. 4 Michigan, who clobbered VCU in the third round to advance to the Sweet 16. Kansas overcame an early deficit to North Carolina in its third-round game to reach Dallas.

Both teams are led by superstar guards. Trey Burke averages 18.8 points and nearly seven assists per game and has no problem getting players such as Tim Hardaway Jr. or Mitch McGary involved. Ben McLemore counters for Kansas; the freshman scored 15.8 points per game and hauls in 5.3 rebounds. He scored just two points against the Tar Heels last weekend, however, and did not make a field goal the entire game.

The late game from Dallas features No. 3 Florida against No. 15 Florida Gulf Coast. The Gators won back-to-back national championships in 2006 and 2007 and then ran away with the SEC this year to emerge as one of the region's most popular picks.

But of course, everyone has been watching Florida Gulf Coast much more closely. As the first 15 seed to ever advance to the Sweet 16, the Eagles' relentless interior attack and focus on high-percentage shots have earned the praise and awe of fans and analysts alike. But in order for Florida Gulf Coast to take Dunk City to the Elite Eight, it will have to play its game against a Gators team that can also get out and run and is known for blowing out less talented opponents.

Both touchdown passes for Dallas went for 58 yards and allowed the Cowboys to overcome a 7-0 first quarter deficit. The first came after just three plays and 74 yards, and was done in less than a minute and a half. The second, with just under six minutes to go, was after five plays and 75 yards. Bryant leads the game with five receptions and 145 yards.

Romo was 9-12 passing in the first half for 176 yards. He did not throw an interception, making his two touchdowns stand out that much more.

On the other side, the New Orleans Saints scored their first touchdown on a nine-yard run from Mark Ingram at the 10:31 mark in the first quarter. Ingram had 12 carries for 38 yards to lead the game in rushing. Quarterback Drew Brees threw 22-30 for 261 yards, and accounted for the second touchdown -- a six-yard pass to Lance Moore with just over a minute left in the half.

The Saints took the lead with time winding down in the half when Garrett Hartley knocked down a 37-yard field goal to make it 17-14.

Vladimir Safranov won the men's title, while Natassia Padalinskaya took first for the women in the 43rd Dallas Marathon.

20,000 runners lined the streets of Dallas on Sunday, and a few hours later, it was Vladimir Safranov of Russia and Natassia Padalinskaya of Belarus who had separated themselves from everyone else.

Safranov won the men's division at the 43rd running of the Dallas Marathon with a time of 2 hours, 19 minutes and 39 seconds. It was his debut marathon, and he earned $5,000 for winning it, plus an additional $1,500 bonus for beating the elite high school relay.

Padalinskaya was the fastest woman to finish. She did so in 2 hours, 43 minutes and 56 seconds.

Andrew Letherby from Australia won the men's half marathon and Ashley Johnson, from Dallas, won the women's. Letherby finished in 1 hour, 9 minutes and 45 seconds, while Johnson completed 13.1 miles in 1 hour, 21 minutes and 36 seconds. Neither Letherby nor Johnson was listed in the half marathon's elite group before the race.

Sunday's race was the first of three in the three-race Texas Marathons series, with the Houston Marathon and Austin Marathon to follow.

The Oklahoma Sooners are helping their own BCS cause so far today, leading TCU 14-7 at halftime. They'll need a win and a Kansas State loss to be Big 12 champions.

The Oklahoma Sooners used touchdowns in the final minutes of each quarter to grab a 14-7 halftime lead Saturday over the TCU Horned Frogs in a crucial regular season finale.

A win today for Oklahoma on the road would put pressure on Kansas State tonight to win its game against Texas. If the Wildcats lose and the Sooners hold on today, Oklahoma will win the Big 12 and get the league's BCS berth.

In a game that was scoreless for the first 14:30, Oklahoma quarterback Landry Jones finally put the Sooners on the board with an 11-yard touchdown pass to Damien Williams. The Sooners led 7-0 after a quarter.

That lead stood for almost the rest of the first half. But with just under four minutes to play in the second quarter, Sam Carter intercepted a pass from Jones and ran it back 43 yards to set up a TCU touchdown. On the next snap, Trevone Boykin ran the remaining six yards for the score, tying the game at 7.

Jones redeemed himself just a few minutes later though, with a 24-yard touchdown pass to Jalen Saunders to cap a nine-play, 75-yard drive, giving Oklahoma a 14-7 lead.

Jones was 14-of-23 passing in the first half for 153 yards. BJ Catalon led the TCU offense with 20 rushing yards on five carries.

Oklahoma and Kansas State have matching 7-1 records atop the Big 12, while Texas sits in third.

With one week left in the 2012 NCAA football season, Oklahoma and Kansas State are deadlocked atop the Big 12 standings with matching 7-1 records. Texas is right behind them at 5-3 in the league, along with Oklahoma State.

Oklahoma visits TCU next Saturday while Kansas State hosts the Longhorns. If the Sooners and Wildcats are still tied after next week, Kansas State will be the Big 12 champion due to the head-to-head tiebreaker. The Wildcats won the teams' contest on Sept. 22, 24-19 in Norman.

Texas, though out of the race for a conference championship, can cap a nine-win season and disrupt Kansas State's BCS hopes with a win next Saturday.

Every Big 12 team is bowl eligible except for the Kansas Jayhawks, who are last in the league at 0-8 and 1-10 overall. So really this last week comes down to positioning in the final standings. Only 2.5 games separate the third-place Longhorns with the eighth-place Baylor Bears, so a lot can still change even though most teams only have one game left.

Baylor was not given much of a chance this week against Oklahoma, but the Bears kept it close, falling by just eight. But the fans weren't looking for moral victories.

The Baylor Bears came into their game against the Oklahoma Sooners as 21½-point underdogs and were never given much of a chance. But after the first quarter, Baylor actually outscored Oklahoma for the rest of the game, ultimately falling 42-34.

It was a good effort and a hard-fought game, but SB Nation's Baylor blog, Our Daily Bears, was not satisfied.

It probably seems weird that I'm lamenting the fact that a 21½-point underdog lost by 8. You know I fully expected to lose this game, but the way we lost it still bothers me. We looked overmatched on offense for the first real time this season, the defense failed to replicate its success last week against Kansas when it needed to, and we lost our first game this season where we won the turnover margin.

So where does the blame fall for losing a game that could have salvaged a disappointing season?

Our Daily Bears seems to think it falls on quarterback Nick Florence. He rushed for 83 yards and a touchdown on 15 carries, but struggled throwing the ball. The senior was just 12-of-33 passing for 172 yards and no touchdowns.

Some will disagree with me placing a significant portion of the blame on Nick Florence, but I honestly believe it. He was 12/33 with several overthrown deep passes that could have been the difference. His receivers didn't help him -- *cough* TEVIN REESE *cough*-- but he was far from good.

The brightest spot, however, for the Bears was the play of sophomore running back Lache Seastrunk. His 15 carries resulted in 91 yards and three touchdowns.

Next up, Baylor gets a chance to play National Championship spoiler when the Bears host undefeated No. 2 Kansas State on Saturday. That game kicks off at 8 p.m. and will be shown on ESPN.

The Longhorns took care of the Iowa State Cyclones, 33-7 on Saturday, and are now No. 15 in the latest Coaches' Poll.

Winners of four straight, the Texas Longhorns have caught fire at just the right time. With their 33-7 win over Iowa State on Saturday, the Longhorns are now No. 15 in the Coaches' Poll and are third in the Big 12.

Texas jumped out to a 14-0 lead over Iowa State after one quarter and never looked back, keeping the Cyclones off the scoreboard the entire second half to secure the win.

The Longhorns are now one of five Big 12 teams in the Top 25. Oklahoma State and Texas Tech entered at the bottom two spots following wins this week.

Outside of the Big 12, the rankings saw a huge change at the top. Alabama lost to Texas A&M and dropped to No. 5, leaving the No. 1 spot open for Oregon, who improved to 10-0 with a win over Cal.

The Ducks are followed by Kansas State and Notre Dame, both also 10-0, to round out the top three. Georgia came in at No. 4.

The TCU Horned Frogs came into Saturday's game against Kansas State with a chance to shake things up in the college football world. A win over the undefeated Wildcats would have meant two unbeatens going down on the same day, making the National Championship picture even more unclear.

Instead, the offense faltered, managing just ten points and the Horned Frogs fell to Kansas State, 23-10. Our TCU blog, Frogs O War, broke down the offense's issues after the game:

The TCU offense never got clicking, as apart from Matthew Tucker on the ground (good to have you back big man) the Frogs were not able to make anything happen with consistency. Trevone Boykin was put on his back six times, went out with an injury when he had finally been clicking, and threw a terrible pick just before the half. Finally in the absolute dregs of garbage time Brandon Carter beasts into the end zone to make the score look more respectable than it actually was.

But even though TCU managed just 10 points, all was not lost on this game. After all, Kansas State is one of the best teams in the country, the Horned Frogs are still bowl elegible and at least the defense showed up to play. In fact, Frogs O War even pointed out that for the future, this team has the potential to field a "dominant" defense with much of its core returning.

So, even with the loss, the future is still bright for TCU. The Horned Frogs now have a week off to get better before finishing out the season against two ranked opponents, Texas and Oklahoma.

The Texas Longhorns escaped Lubbock with a 31-22 win over the Texas Tech Red Raiders on Saturday, giving Texas its third straight victory.

This was the first win of the season for Texas over a ranked opponent and Texas blog Burnt Orange Nation found plenty to cheer about, especially when discussing the Longhorns' play in the red zone on both offense and defense, especially considering their recent troubles there defensively.

The instructional takeaway was the impressive red zone performances by the Longhorn offense and defense. Both Texas Tech and Texas entered the game ranked abysmally in the defensive red zone at 118th and 121st respectively. The much maligned Texas defense had been giving up scores at a 94.29% clip.

In particular, the blog found one play early in the third quarter that could have been a key to the victory.

After a nice pick up of 4 yards on first down, the Red Raider offensive coordinator took the ball away from his hot handed quarterback and went back to his star back Williams out of the pistol formation. Longhorns cornerback Quandre Diggs is playing tight man coverage on the LOS, sniffs the play, rushes from the edge to not only blow up the hole but also make the tackle.
