The NHL is expected to announce the cancelation of the entire preseason due to the lockout.

The NHL will announce the cancelation of the remainder of the preseason on Thursday, according to John Shannon of Sportsnet. This means that there will be no hockey through Oct. 8.

This comes a little over a week after the league was forced to cancel all preseason games through Sept. 30. The cancellation of the preseason stems from the lockout of the NHL Players Association, which was enacted on Sept. 15 after the NHL and NHLPA failed to negotiate a new collective bargaining agreement.

The two sides are tentatively scheduled to meet on Friday, which is the first time since Sept. 12 that the NHL and NHLPA representatives will formally sit down at the bargaining table. The meeting will take place in New York and is expected to focus on non-core economic issues.

Many believe that the quality of this round of negotiations will give an indication as to how long the lockout will last.

After dominating their opponents for the majority of the first month of the season, the Texas Rangers have started May off on the wrong foot registering their first losing streak of the year following a 6-3 loss to the Cleveland Indians on Friday night. The Rangers have now lost their last three games and have dropped five of their last seven.

Rangers' pitcher Colby Lewis (3-1) was handed his first loss of the season when he allowed six runs on 10 hits in 6 2/3 innings pitched against the Indians. He gave up two homeruns; a two-run shot by Shin-Soo Choo in the the second to open the scoring and a solo shot by Jack Hannahan in the third.

Lewis' adversary, Jeanmar Gomez (2-1) registered his second win on the season by holding the offensively potent Rangers to only three runs on eight hits in seven innings pitched.

Johnny Damon and Choo both had a game-high two RBI, which helped power the Tribe to the win. The two teams will pick back up tomorrow night for game two.

Gemologist comes from an impressive lineage and has the natural abilities to be an imposing competitor. His sire, Tiznow is an offspring of the legendary racer, Man o' War and is still the only horse to ever win two Breeders' Cup Classics.

Gemologist's trainer is Todd Pletcher who won the 2010 Kentucky Derby with Super Saver. Pletcher also trained Rags to Riches to win the Kentucky Oats in 2007 as well as to a win at the Belmount Stakes. It was the first time a filly had won the stakes in 102 years. Javier Castellano is the jockey and won the 2004 Breeders' Cup Classic with Ghostzapper and the 2006 Preakness with Bernardini. Winstar Farms LLC. is the ownership group and won the 2010 Kentucky Derby with Super Saver.

Gemologist is a 7/1 favorite to win the Derby.

Here are Gemologist's most recent finishes:

April 7, Resorts World Casino New York City Wood Memorial: Finished first; 1 1/8 miles

November 26, Kentucky Jokey Club: Finished first; 1 1/16 miles

The offspring of Scat Daddy and Follow Your Bliss, Daddy Nose Best is one of two major Derby contenders from the first crop of Scat Daddy, which has left many to believe that Daddy Nose Best will have some extended staying power due to his dam's side of the family.

Daddy Nose Best is trained by racing lifer, Steve Asmussen, who is the son of two horse trainers and brother to Cash a champion jockey. Asmussen has trained over 6000 winners and won 650 races in 2009, shattering his own record for wins in a single season. Garret Gomez will be the jockey; he won back-to-back Eclipses for Outstanding Jockey in 2007 and 2008 and has won ten Breeders' cup races. He has nine appearances in the Derby with his best finish coming in 2009 when he finished second. Cathy and Bob Zellers are the owners and have been associated with horse racing since the 1990s. They have previously run in the Derby with Fifty Stars and Private Emblem.

Daddy Nose Best has a 15/1 odds of winning the Derby.

Here are his most recent finishes:

March 25, Sunland Derby: Finished first; 1 1/8 miles

The offspring of Pulpit, a 1997 favorite to win the Kentucky Derby, El Padrino is a colt who was bred for greatness. Unfortunately, El Padrino's father sustained a career ending injury in the Run for the Roses (where he still finished fourth), but life wasn't all bad for Pulpit after the race as he retired to be a stud.

El Padrino is trained by Todd Fletcher who won the 2010 Kentucky Derby with Super Saver. He led all trainers in monies earned in 2011 working with such stable stars as Stay Thirsty and Awesome Maria. Rafael Bejarano will be the jockey and has won riding titles at all major tracks in California and Kentucky. The ownership group is Let's Go Stable and was created in 2006 by Kevin Scatuorchio and Bryan Sullivan.

As of April 29, El Padrino is a 16/1 odds to win.

Here is how El Padrino has faired in his three most recent races:

Florida Derby, March 31: Finished fourth; 1 1/8 miles.

After finishing the opening month of the season with the best record in all of baseball, the Texas Rangers will look to carry over that same kind of success into May as they open the month on Tuesday with the second game of a three game set against the Toronto Blue Jays.

Coming off of a dominating 4-1 win in Toronto on Monday, the Rangers will look to improve upon their league leading, 9-1 road record. This will also be the second game of a ten-game road trip.

The probable starters for Tuesday are Neftali Feliz for the Rangers and Drew Hutchinson for the Blue Jays. Feliz is 1-1 is three starts this season and has appeared in four games. He has a 3.00 ERA, one complete game and 14 strikeouts in 21 innings pitched this season. Hutchinson is 1-0 in two starts this season with a 6.10 ERA in 10.1 innings pitched.

Rick Carlisle has not been a happy man since the NBA's second season started for his Dallas Mavericks last Saturday. With his team in an 0-2 hole on the back of two game-winning last second shots from the second-seeded, Oklahoma City Thunder, Carlisle has got to be frustrated with how things are playing out.

However, thats not the only thing thats getting under his skin. Following a chippy Game 2, Carlisle voiced his concerns about the way the Thunder were guarding his star player, Dirk Nowitzki.

Nowitzki and Thunder center, Kendrick Perkins engaged in a shoving match in the first quarter of Monday night's Game 2 that required officials to break it up. Both players received technical fouls on the play. This was the second time that quarter that Nowitzki had been roughed up, as Serge Ibaka had made contact with his face earlier in the stanza.

Carlisle expressed his displeasure with the events. Here's his comment via USA Today:

"I love hard-played, clean, competitive playoff series," Carlisle said to reporters. "You throw the ball up, may the best team win. The dirty (expletive) has got to stop. We don't want anybody getting hurt out there either way."

It certainly should make things interesting as the series heads back to Dallas for Game 3 on Thursday.
