BMW Championship 2012: Phil Mickelson Surges To Top Of Leaderboard

With the best round of the day, Phil Mickelson went from outside of the top 10 to the tournament lead at the BMW Championship during round three of the tournament on Saturday.

Mickelson recorded five birdies on each the front and back nine and dropped only two bogeys during the round to finish the day with a 64. The leader entering the day, Vijay Singh, shot held on to a tie for the lead with a 69, setting up a Sunday showdown for the tournament victory.

One golfer that will have some catching up to do if he hopes to compete on Sunday, though, is Tiger Woods who had his poorest performance of the tournament. With four bogeys in a six hole span on the front nine, Woods provided some damage control with birdies on four of five holes shortly after his negative streak. He is No. 8 on the leaderboard, three strokes off the lead.

Texas native Bob Estes passed seven up the leaderboard on Saturday to assume the No. 37 spot, but at 11 strokes off the lead it would take a Herculean effort coupled with plenty of help for Estes to be in contention.
