Maria Sharapova, the third seed in the world, needed three sets to get past No. 19 Nadia Petrova on Sunday evening during a rain-delayed match at Arthur Ashe Stadium in round three of the 2012 U.S. Open Tennis Championship. Sharapova will face Marion Bartoli in the Women's Quarterfinals after the French player upset No. 5 Petra Kvitova earlier in the day.
In other women's action, Laura Robson of Great Britain saw her surprising charge through the tournament come to an end as she was unable to overcome numerous unforced errors against defending champion Samantha Stosur.
USA's Andy Roddick will delay his retirement for just one more round after the No. 20 seed dispatched Italy's Fabio Fognini, 7-5, 7-6(1), 4-6, 6-4 on Sunday after struggling midway through the match. Roddick will face No. 7 Juan Martin Del Potro of Argentina in the Round of 16, who defeated Leonardo Mayer 6-3, 7-5, 7-6(9).
Roger Federer continued his easy trek through the brackets, dispatching No. 25 Fernando Verdasco in straight sets, and will face USA's Mardy Fish on Monday.
