It might or might not require surgery and Witten hasn't been ruled out for the Cowboys' Week 1 game against the defending Super Bowl champion New York Giants, an early pivotal game for which Dallas would surely love to be at full strength.
Team owner Jerry Jones, noted Giants hater, had worried that the hit Witten took from Oakland Raiders linebacker Rolando McClain would be bad. The severity of the spleen injury isn't known now, but it would at least appear Jones had reason to worry.
The Cowboys seemed to have escaped their 3-0 preseason-opening win over the Oakland Raiders Monday night with only an injury to mid-round linebacker Kyle Wilber. Obviously, losing their All-Pro tight end would be a much bigger blow should he miss significant regular-season time.
Quarterback Tony Romo doesn't need the loss of depth at wide receiver, either. Dez Bryant played and caught a single pass Monday after being questionable, and starter Miles Austin sat out the game.
