A week after dropping out of the Top 25, the Texas Longhorns couldn't afford a hiccup in a doubleheader Saturday against Texas Southern, of the Southwestern Athletic Conference. The Longhorns delivered, posting 3-0 and 12-3 wins.
Closer Corey Knebel stretched out effectively in Game One, throwing all seven innings of the shortened contest. He threw a one-hitter in his first collegiate start, walking one, striking out six, and getting the job done in 79 pitches.
The bats woke up for the 'Horns in Game Two, scoring in six separate innings. Leadoff man Mark Payton hit a grand slam in the second inning that was more than Texas ended up needing, but the offense put together an 11 hit, eight walk, 12 run effort anyway. Starter Dillon Peters was credited with the victory, allowing no runs in four innings of work.
Texas heads to Waco on Thursday to play the No. 2 Baylor Bears, before returning home to close out the series and the regular season on Saturday and Sunday at UFCU Disch-Falk Field in Austin.
