San Francisco Giants Release Former Rangers Prospect Michael Main

Talk about disappointing. Former Texas Rangers first round pick Michael Main was released this past week by the San Francisco Giants.

Baseball America ranked Main as Texas' sixth best prospect headed into the 2008 season, which, unfortunately for Main, would be his peak on the list. Main drew comparisons to Bret Saberhagen, because of his intelligence as well as arm strength.

Main, tabbed as a top of the rotation starter, never came close to realizing that potential. Last year as a 22 year old in the Cal League, Main pitched 55.2 innings, giving up 40 earned runs -- good for a 6.84 ERA. Main walked 36 and struck out 46.

It's probable that Main will get another chance with a different organization, and he'll certainly be somebody to root for if he does.
