This coming Saturday is the first Saturday in May -- and we all know what that means: it's time for the annual Run for the Roses, as the 2012 Kentucky Derby will be held on Saturday, May 5 at the illustrious Churchill Downs in Louisville, Kentucky.
The 2012 version of the Kentucky Derby will the 138th time that the Kentucky Derby has taken place. Last year, Animal Kingdom, ridden by John Velazquez and owned by H. Graham Motion, was the winner. Animal Kingdom's attempt at the Triple Crown was quickly thwarted, as Shackleford won the Preakness Stakes.
Affirmed was the last horse to win the Triple Crown, and he did so in 1978.
Bodemeister and Union Rags are the two early favorites to win the Kentucky Derby on Saturday, as both horses are listed with 9/2 odds.
While the gates at Churchill Downs will open at 8 a.m. on Saturday, post time is not until 6:24 p.m. locally in Kentucky, 5:24 p.m. in Dallas. The Kentucky Derby is known as the fastest two minutes in sports -- so be sure to tune in on time if you plan on catching the race live.
